Virgina Woolf - Geffen Playhouse Apr 25
2022, 08:18:10 PM
My take: solid production, ultimately disappointing. Aimee Carrero's Honey was excellent though, the funniest person onstage AND the most moving.
Each performer was clearly a VERY good actor but...they mostly were operating in too narrow of emotional ranges to sustain three hours onstage.
And the direction was unimaginative -- again, totally workmanlike but...very rarely surprising or arresting.
A lot of the blame IMHO is Quinto as George...I&

Virgina Wolfe - Geffen Playhouse Apr 24

I'll be there tonight and will report back! It's one of my favorite plays -- I don't particularly see Quinto and Flockhart as George and Martha, but hoping to be pleasantly surprised!
(It's also their last show of a 5-show-weekend, and it's preview week, so if they're doing it right, they're probably going to be EXHAUSTED)

TRAVESTIES (2018) Previews Apr 1
2018, 12:22:45 AM
Saw it tonight -- enjoyed it. Would NOT describe it as "hilarious," or recommend it to most friends except the nerdiest, but it's certainly madcap and never boring. Seth Numrich and Tom Hollander give great performances. Some truly great jokes, rip-roaring dialogue, and I'm sure so many references that went over my head.
Knowing Importance of Being Earnest extremely well, I was shocked at the many scenes that are ripped directly from Earnest, almost

THE ICEMAN COMETH (2018) Previews Mar 30
2018, 10:21:48 AM
What a slog at this juncture. We couldn't wait for it to end last night. I have NO doubt it will improve with weeks of previews to go, but speaking as an O'Neill fan but complete Iceman Cometh virgin -- me and my friend just couldn't even follow what was going on. I don't want to name names early in previews, but several of the Tony-winning etc supporting players were incomprehensible for more than half their lines, the accents were delightful in theory but diction was SORELY lacking, especially for such dense and old-timey-slang-filled language. Seems like an easy fix with one diction note from Mr. Wolfe, hope that'll happen, cuz right now GUH. Others in supporting cast were fine to really great (all the ladies were spot-on, though do we really need a revival of a show where the few women on stage are literally dumb w*ores who get slapped around??). Denzel...(okay that name I'll name)...is one of my favorite screen actors, and he has MOMENTS here that were striking and beautiful, he's got such emotional facility, and you never doubt his truthfulness for a second...BUT in terms of filling that stage with his choices... :/ I hoped at worst the play would be fine and then "oooh Denzel's onstage, magic", but he wasn't even my favorite performer onstage. I honestly perked up more every time Michael Potts had stuff to do. The exception was Denzel's big last monologue which was the best part of the play but in the same way Denzel brilliantly doing a Juliet monologue would be good too. I didn't feel like I knew what Hickey's deal was throughout the play, and not in a good way. It just felt like Denzel. (Didn't help that textual references to him being fat or a slob made me think Denzel was miscast?) But principally we just didn't know what was going on with all the supporting players' journeys so weren't invested in anything. Were almost tempted to leave at various intermissions, but we kept waiting for it to somehow turn amazing. These are obviously all pros, plus this play is considered a total classic, so I assume with another month of rehearsal the show could turn out to be spectacular. I'd advise steering clear for a few weeks though. Right now me and my friend felt we'd totally wasted our time and money, sadly!

Thanks, yeah it's not Ticketmaster. And yeah I figure it'll start a few min late it's partly the principle of the thing that galls me, such a dumb setup! And also some Broadway theaters don't get great cell service too...

angels lottery problem Mar 27
2018, 03:10:57 PM
Um...so I just won the digital lottery to tomorrow's Wedns matinee of Angels in America part one.. SO stoked!!! Was going to be up at 7am rushing it otherwise. BUT the evening lottery for part two is separate. And you find out if you won at *1pm* Wedns--and you have an hour to buy the tickets. Part one BEGINS at 1pm. So if I win, while the curtain is raising on Millennium Approaches am I supposed to be frantically entering credit card info for that night's Perestroika?? I would HAT

In NYC for exactly a week starting tmrw, hoping to see a bunch of shows, and for the Broadway shows listed above, wondering if anyone has a recent experience to share re: how early to show up for any of their respective rushes! Also: how crazy is the Mathilda lottery? Oh bonus--extra love if anyone knows how bad or not bad the Delacorte line has been? Hoping for no rain... Thanks!

BULLET FOR ADOLF Reviews Aug 8
2012, 03:06:32 PM
Saw it Saturday and found it...eh. Handful of funny lines interspersed amongst a stupid plot and stale humor. Transitions best part. Ben Brantley was sitting near me; maybe he just has a critic's poker face but he didn't look like he was having fun.

Into The Woods - TIX / LOTTO / LINE Aug 8
2012, 03:02:22 PM
Can tell everyone exactly when the last person got in line who got tickets today--7.40am. I would know because we got in line at 7.45am and were the first to get only standby line vouchers (and this after getting tickets Sunday and having the show canceled due to rain, after standing in the rain an hour--no luck!). We were way ahead of the rock in line and everybody had said we'd be fine. There were a handful of 1am and 2am people at the front of the line, along with a bunch of scal
