If I take a 1:11pm train out of Penn, which supposedly gets me to Millburn at 1:52, is that sufficient time to walk to the theatre and get settled and what not for a 2:30 show? Should I take the earlier train which gets in at 12:52 or is there no need? Thanks.
It only takes about 5-10 minutes to walk from the train to the theatre. So getting in 40 minutes before should be fine, as long as the train is on time.
Question along the same lines. I have tickets to the evening show, what is the train schedule like after that show?
Thanks.

As an every-day commuter on NJ Transit (although not that line) - good luck. Train service has been TERRIBLE lately. And for this they are raising fares in July.

If I am uber-paranoid about delayed trains and take the earlier train, is there anything to do/eat around there? A tree to sit under?
Yes milburn is actually a semi cute town, there is a starbucks, a great sandwich place next to it, and a lot of restaraunts. also, lots of trees to sit under :-P
Cool. Thanks for the info. Are these cute things between the train station and the theatre? Or do I have to venture off the map to find them? I do love a good shady tree. :)

Walk in the same direction the train is going. Down the steps, cross the street (look both ways), walk along the library parking lot, past a playing field (lacrosse, soccer), over the footbridge spanning the creek that is really the north branch of the Rahway River and keep walking on the path to the next street.
Turn right, walk past more playing fields to Brookside Drive, walk down Brookside to the Playhouse which you can see from the beginning of this paragraph. Time elapsed, maybe 10 minutes.
Go back to the top of the last paragraph. If you go left and under the railroad bridge and get to the second light, turn left and you can cop a sandwich and eat it in the park or there is a simple Mexican restaurant within a short walk.
Getting to and around Milburn is so easy, it would only take a New Yorker to complicate things.
Trains back run every hour. Get a schedule. As for evening shows, I learned the hard way not to go because if you miss one train, you have to cool your heels in the dark for as long as 59 minutes and then it may take you to Hoboken where you pick up the PATH train instead of taking you to Penn Station.
At any rate it is very simple.
They are 1 block out of the way. Actually more like they are the town and papermill is really on the outskirts of town a block or two behind town. It's pretty easy to navigate. Theres very little up there.
Great.
Thanks for the detailed directions WOSQ. I do hope you know that NYers love their grids and have no sense of direction (this one at least). Doesn't sound too tough to get to though.
WOSQ, when I purchased my ticket they already warned me that the trains back to NY are not direct so I'd have to change. I'm surprised they don't have a 7:30 curtain for the evening shows. I'm hoping a friend of mine from NYC decides to join me, so at least I'll have a ride back!!
Thanks for the info.
Dottie - are you going on a weekday? According to NJ Transit, trains back to the city don't run that late. The last one from Millburn ends at 9:57pm. I think the show runs later than that?
If you're going on a weekend you should be fine. May not even have to transfer.
I'm going on a Thursday evening. How odd, because before I purchased the ticket, I specifically asked about train service back to NYC. Thanks for the heads up. I'll have to check out the train schedule.

There are busses, but I haven't a clue when they run.

The NJ Transit website is at njtransit.com.
For weekdays
------------
The 9:57pm is the last train that goes to NY Penn Station.
There are later trains at 10:26pm, 11:25pm which drop you off at Hoboken. Then you'll have to take the PATH over to Manhattan.
For weekends
------------
There is are trains at 10:49pm, 11:49pm that goes to NY Penn Station.

ouch. I may not be able to go to NYC that often then.
I feel oh so fortunate to live near the Paper Mill.
As a fellow Manhattanite, I too get nervous outside the city. Having said that, I have been to Paper Mill several times, always on the train, and it's not so difficult. As I hate arriving late, I would take an earlier train to allow for plenty of time before the show. At this time of year, you can pick up a snack in Millburn and walk over to the theatre and eat out back along the river. Going home, I wouldn't bother trying to figure out the buses, at that hour they only go as far as Irvington (wherever that is) and not even into Newark. If you miss the last direct train, you can change at Hoboken to PATH which, if you live near the West Village, may be more convenient than going to Penn Station. I always bring a book or newspaper to pass the time.
