Mormons are not portrayed in a bad light in this show. The show is not a work of maliciousness. I think the reason most mormons would be offended by this is the profanity. Not because it is hateful and degrading, because it is not. The burning of the holy book of a religion is.

It's hard to gauge how the LDS really feel about the musical, since it's almost unofficial Church policy not to call for boycotts and things of that nature. They tend to take the "higher road" in situations such as this and either remain silent or issue very measured, respectful statements. As long as nothing obstructs the Church's higher purpose, they let it slide, really. This is where one can compare the LDS and radicals of any faith- whether the Muslims who riot because their prophet was drawn in a cartoon or the Christians who protest Jerry Springer the Opera or Scientologists who call "libel!" at any minor offense and sue. Mormons are pretty damn sensible and respectful when it comes to stuff like that.

That being said, it has been reported that many Mormons who HAVE seen the musical have enjoyed it- in the Salt Lake City Tribune, of all places.

The point is, I don't think the Church of Latter-Day Saints wants or needs people getting offended on their behalf. They would certainly act if they found something really repulsive and blasphemous, something really detrimental to their cause. Like gay marriage, for example.
