can anyone explain the newsies curtain to me, it looks like a tall frame with 9 box's, those boxes have a screen of some sort in front of them , how does that screen dissapear when the show starts as the steel frame seems to be used throughout the show but the screens are not attached any more?

Bump.

When I was in the UK last month, I saw Stephen Ward, my first West End musical. Earlier in this thread, somebody said West End shows drop the fire curtain at intermission just to show the audience that it is there, but in this case, it was dropped after the blackout at the end of the first act, and stayed throughout the interval. Maybe it’s different from theater to theater.

^I'm pretty sure that's usually when the fire curtain comes down, isn't it?

Show Curtains

The west-end (well, now Manchester) production of Dirty Rotten Scoundrels

How different is it from the Broadway production?

Very different. I remember it looking something like this, but I'm not sure this pic is of the Broadway production.

to answer you aasjb4ever, if a west end theatre does use a safety curtain, it comes down as soon as act 1 finishes and lifts about 2 minutes before act 2 begins. Hope this answers your question :)

I loved the curtain for I'll Eat You Last with the faux-cigarette warning. As much as I loved the curtain, I was shaking with excitement waiting for Bette on the other side.

Sidenote, my favorite concert curtain was Bette's Divine Miss Millennium Tour that was the solar system with her face in the moon and then it became part of the opening of the show.

Based on the raves, I'm thinking it just doesn't photograph as well as it looks in person.

Based on photos on Instagram, I think it changes to just a bright blue scrim during intermission.

^^^^^^
It may be just a sky drop, but is quite striking. I was actually disappointed with the rest of the designs because of it.

Show Curtains

I've never really been a fan of elaborate curtains. Generally I find them tacky. What I really like is just a nice red velvet curtain. It makes the show feel more like an event. My favorite curtain is the one at the War Memorial Opera House in San Francisco. It's gold and feels very grand

^ That is not a show curtain but rather the main rag, or house curtain. A show curtain is part of the scenic design and let's you know something about the show when you enter the theater.
