Sunny11 said: "But the concept behind American Psycho is original. How often is a murderer the central protagonist of a musical? "

Let's see: Chicago, Sweeney Todd, Parade (depending on if you think Leo Frank is guilty), Jekyll and Hyde, Little Shop of Horrors, Phantom of the Opera (if you consider the Phantom a protagonist), Bonnie & Clyde . . . I'm sure there are more.

The difference is all those had sides to them than were redeemable, Bateman isn't. They have based the show around an unlikeabke character who does awful things and still managed to make the audience like him. Other than Jean the rest of the characters are also not likeable but your invested.

The show has taken huge strides forward in video work, sound and design. The score is unique in so many ways and the subject matter is not seen as accessible to a mainstream musical theatre audience and yet that's exactly what they have done.

I think that shows like Waitress just have more commercial appeal. It's a fun night at the theater, as well as fantastic performances and a fantastic score. American Psycho has fantastic performances and a fantastic score, but it's not a fun lighthearted musical.

While I had admired your cheerleading for American Psycho, there is no need to bash other shows to lift up your fave show (looking at you songanddanceetc). There is room in Broadway for many diverse shows to cater to different audiences. I have tix to both American Psycho  and Waitress for my May visit and looking forward to seeing both.

I didn't bash it, I was talking from my own opinion that I have no interest in it.

#126 songetc lives in the UK. I don't think he/she has even got the chance to see the shows bashed. Stick to the show you've seen but don't bring in the other shows you haven't seen

JM266 what is your problem with me you  odd ball? And of course I haven't seen the show, I never said I had, I said it's not a show for me, everything I've seen and heard from it bored me, I feel like I've seen a million musicals like it......that is my opinion.

first of all, that wasn't what I was answering. The assertion was that the show was original because it featured a murderer as the protagonist and that no other show had. There was no qualification other than being a murderer. Second, not all of them are redeemable.

Just saw American Psycho for the first time tonight.  Wow.  My poor brain doesn't know what to think!  So much to take in.  I think when I'm back in the city in two weeks I may need to see it again.

When I saw it last week I thought it was fun junk.  Definitely do the lotto or tkts.  Fun!  But don't spend big money.   I had a better time at this than at Shuffle.  Just being honest .

Saw this tonight and thought it was great!  This is why I don't listen to the critics. I would absolutely like to see it again. Definitely my second favorite new musical this season.

Just saw the Sat matinee and was disturbed that there were whole rows of empty seats in the mezzanine. Are people turned off by the subject? Mixed reviews for a show that just opened shouldn't make that kind of difference. I hope it gets seen: Benjamin Walker's performance was riveting and the production design was original and really effective.

And people, can we all just get along?

Scroll past NSFW review of James Franco film for great review of AP.

Stylishly innovative, Walker and Helene Yorke terrific....

"American Psycho the Musical takes us to the heart (or, rather, the heartlessness) of the 1980s, when people worked out for their health in between doing nonstop recreational rugs and having unsafe sex."

What the hell is a recreational rug???

Seems like a typo- recreational drugs not rugs.

Marie: Don't be in such a hurry about that pretty little chippy in Frisco. Tony: Eh, she's a no chip!

They need to drop the price of the mezz back to where it was during previews. Especially with the lackluster reviews. Guess they were expecting better.

What was the price before and what is it now, out of curiosity?

I believe they were $89. I got one through Ticketmania for $59. The center mezz is now $145 same as non premium orchestra .

I just got a discount ticket for it as well….for May.

Apparently some fairly mixed reviews.  I'll be interested to see how long this show holds out.  It does seem that there are some (both critics and theatergoers) who weren't all that impressed.

But there also seems to be a lot of people who do like it too.

Will it be the Finding Neverland of this season?  The little engine that thinks (and knows) it can….and continues to draw an audience despite the lukewarm reception?  I know the thing FN has that's going for it is  its appeal to families.   AP in no way appeals to that demo, but it does appeal to another generation of theatergoers….so who knows?

Despite the reviews, I still want to see it.   I did that for Bullets Over Broadway and loved it.  Totally disagreed with the critics, and the audience members who didn't like it.  Of course it didn't last.  But at least I got to see it and am glad I did.

The house was packed tonight. It looked sold out to me and everyone leaving the theater seemed to have really enjoyed it. I am hoping that word of mouth helps sell the show and makes it a hit.

I was there Sat night and I agree with you Jordan.  I think it was sold out.  And everyone was impressed and saying really good things about the show.  God knows between posts on Facebook and chatting with people I'm giving it some good plugs.  I think word of mouth is really going to help this show.  If it even needs helps.  I think it's going to be around for awhile!
