I no longer understand the hype around Book of Mormon. Sorry not sorry.

Edit: People need to stop relying on critics to dictate which shows they see. If you have the money and can see a show-see it!! We need joy and if  a show brings that to you, that is what is important. Ignore the critics.

100% ignore the critics. I go in every show blind. What gets me to see a show is simply the summary on the website. Could care less what the critics say. Also agree with you about Book of Mormon. Truthfully, never understood the hype around it from day one.

Because quite a few people and critics found it very funny and irreverent.

For me, best source for reviews is show-score.com. Often hundreds of reviews by real theatregoers, not just critics. Gives me a good sense of what people like and dislike and I can match that against my personal preferences. Rarely disagree with the consensus score.

I'm really tired of people who yell "woke" about everything now.  I guess most of us know by now what that is really code for and the kind of people who utter it.

I use that term a lot, so if it was directed to me, I am not sure what the context was, but think whatever you want. It's your right, just like it's my right to say whatever I want. But if every show nowadays is "woke" and changed completely, then you can't complain that people use the term "woke", leave the musicals alone and then no one is going to use that term anymore. You still need talent, so for us, non talented people, who can't sing, act or dance, we still have no chance to be on a Broadway stage. Haha.

My choices for this posting are as follows:

THE BOOK OF MORMON and CATS:  They just didn't live up to my expectations or all the hype and awards (as others have mentioned).  The productions that I saw had wonderful performers but the actual shows left me disappointed.

PATTI LUPONE:  She may be very talented and an acclaimed performer but there is an intensity and sharpness about her persona that is unappealing to me and, therefore, I have not been a fan.

ETHEL MERMAN:  I never saw her perform in person but I did see her frequently on television when I was younger.  At the time, I thought she was great but, in viewing clips of her and listening to recordings today, I feel she was quite over-rated.  Her singing was definitely loud but not really very musical.  Even though she is considered The First Lady of Broadway, I now view her performances as stiff and without any nuance.  She did have the good fortune of appearing in shows that became classics but, if she was starting out today, I don't think she would achieve the success she did in her heyday.

The term "woke" in the context it is used today, has been appropriated as a pejorative by those on the right after fading away as part of the popular vernacular of the left a few years ago. The term is exploited by agenda driven public figures (mostly right wing politicians and media personalities), and rather than serve as an effective insult, it now serves to identify those who use it in that context as almost tragically lacking in cultural perspective and self awareness. There is a vulgar term used to describe people like that, (a term that draws parallels between that person and a feminine hygiene device), that has been around far longer than "woke" and is usually reserved for those who appear to have dedicated their lives to earning that label.

I'm actually thankful when people use "woke" as an insult.  They are providing a tool for putting everything else they say in the proper perspective.

I will add Shucked to the list, it was totally sold out on a Tuesday night. I also added White Girl in Danger and NY NY. Please check page 1 for the ratings. Feel free to add your ratings or share opinions. I guess the only show that gets 5 stars is Funny Girl with LEA, TOVAH, RAMIN AND JARED.

I'm curious if you ever saw Neil Diamond before he retired from doing shows?   I did many times...

so I give:

Same! It's very useful. It's dating myself but it's how people derisively used "politically correct" in the late 90s/early 00s.

Book of Mormon *

I don't understand the hype around this show. When I saw it I was like, this is what I was excited for? This is what won Best Musical? Nah. I did not like it at all.

For me it's the complete opposite. I like her because of her persona. She is honest and sincere, which is rare in showbusiness. A breath of fresh air if you ask me. Unfortunately many people can't handle realness and rather live in a world full of insincerity.

I am not a fan of her performances. To me she lacks articulation and nuance, and sings everything on 1 (loud) volume, 1 tempo and with 1 intention. At times she sounds like a turkey, gobbling through the song. A Turkey with a bottle of liquor in her purse.

Thanks for your input on my post.  Although Patti Lupone is highly regarded, I do agree with you about her performances.  She always seems to come across like gangbusters.  I, too, appreciate honesty in a person but, in my eyes, Patti gives the impression of being arrogant, pompous and somewhat "full of herself" when expressing her opinions.  It also makes me a bit suspicious that she revels in the notoriety that her comments bring which weakens her sincerity.  That's the part that bothers me about her.  I guess we all have our perceptions of people.

My unpopular opinion is "Chicago" is one of the most overrated musicals of all time. Bare bones staging and costumes which to me means no "razzle dazzle". After the opening song "All That Jazz", it is mostly downhill from there. The "legendary" Fosse choreography/dancing was ok but I have seen better dancing in shows like "Movin Out", "Bandstand" and "American in Paris".
