49ers cornerback Chris Culliver was asked how he felt about out gay players in football. His response is sad.
"I don't do the gay guys man," said Culliver, whose Niners play the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday. "I don't do that. No, we don't got no gay people on the team, they gotta get up out of here if they do.
"Can't be with that sweet stuff. Nah…can't be…in the locker room man. Nah."
I wonder if Chris has ever visited the city he plays for.

This guy is a mediocre back up and Jim Harbaugh, the 49ers coach, has been a pretty strong proponent of equal rights. I have a feeling this kid won't sniff the field during the Super Bowl and has probably played his last down as a Niner.

^ I agree. His comments are very ignorant and hateful, but I can't think of anything the guy has done this season that's worth mentioning.

"With the Super Bowl XLVII only days away, Culliver’s inflammatory remarks have many fans calling for official action from the 49ers ranging from Culliver’s suspension to a formal apology"

I have a real problem with any kind of official retribution/punishment against Culliver.

I'm all for his gay team-mates coming out, and I would be happy to see the teams supporters--gay and (even better) straight--expressing disappointment, anger, whatever.

But the man expressed his personal feelings. I don't like them, but I don't think it's appropriate to punish him for them.

It's the 49'ers. Not 69'ers.

Seriously, though, get this ****an English lesson. STAT.

Jungle Red-I am really disgusted by this. I'm in New Jersey, but I've been a fan of the 49ers for a long time. I was so excited that they made it to the Super Bowl again. I won't let this moron speak on behalf the the whole team. And again, I highly doubt he will end up playing in the game much anyway, if at all.

Addison - while it's true that he was expressing his personal feelings it is a very fine line when you are doing an interview on press day of the Super Bowl as to whether or not you are representing yourself or your team.

It's inappropriate and unfair to his team mates to say something like this during media day.

I've never really understood the point behind "forced apologies", but I'm sure we'll hear him speak out in a day or two apologizing for his comments. He'll likely read them directly from the note card that the 49ers Press Agent writes them on.

Between this and Randy Moss being insane enough to say he was "the greatest of all time" while wearing the same jersey Jerry Rice wore it's been a less than stellar press day for the Niners.

Let's hope it isn't too much of a distraction and they can still go out and kick some ass on Sunday.

I live in San Francisco and I think all of my friends are 49ers fans. Our usual watering hole will play the game and it'll be packed. Whether we win or lose, there will be a repeat of what happened when the Giants won the World Series.

In short, "the girls have gone wild. The girls have gone wild."

I'm thinking of switching shifts with my coworker so I can be safely at work instead of out after the game. My work is also next to a sports bar that's always packed for any game. News crews are usually there too.

If I work, I'm locking the front doors during the game. I don't need a riot in my hotel.

It used to be that less than a decade ago the star wideout Terrell Owens implied that Quarterback Jeff Garcia was gay as an insult, to imply his weakness as both a man and a quarterback along with Garrison Hearst, the stand-out runningback, saying something along the lines as this (by a non-entity scrub who only has a platform to say this thanks to the play of others and nothing more). All while on the 49ers mind you.

Unfortunately, the Ray Lewis deer antler spray story is probably going to be the story of the Super Bowl from the rest of the week. It plays into the narrative that the guy is an Elmer Gantry level fraud after many people forgave him for his possible role in a murder a decade ago just because he is awesome at tackling.

There is supposed to be a pro-Gay Equality ad to play in the Super Bowl but I do not know the specifics or if it is just a rumor.

As a British Limey, I now have a problem. The BBC are heavily promoting their coverage of this game, and as a gay man who knows as much about American football as Julie Andrews knows about poverty, I rather thought I'd support the San Fransisco team (it being a kind of spiritual home).

Now this chap has dampend my enthusiasm.

Someone help me

Seeing how things like Ben Cohen's organization (organisation) and players like Kluwe and the Ravens player (I can't even begin to spell his name and I'm too lazy to cut and paste), there should be something at the Superbowl. Now, local affiliates can choose what parts to air.

This comes after Sports Illustrated shows two guys kissing while they were doing a story on a new gay sports bar in the Castro.

(Lucky for that bar owner, huh? Opening a bar weeks before the 49ers go to the Superbowl? It's like he knows the future!)

The Ravens have Brendon Ayanbadejo. Who's not only hot, he's been an outspoken supporter of gay rights.

Thank you, Erik. I'm indeed talking about Ayanbadejo. That would be really fun to say in bed!

What we need is more people like Ayanbadejo, Kluwe, and Cohen. Positive role models who aren't scared to take a stand and less asshats like Culliver.

Two steps forward, one step back.

Although he is now retired Michael Strahan, who co-hosts with Kelly Ripa along with being a major figure on the NFL pre-game show on Fox, has been a very positive voice in gay rights and gay marriage in New York.

Certainly Culliver is entitled to his opinion. But if he's disrespecting his teammates ("No, we don't got no gay people on the team, they gotta get up out of here if they do") then the team really needs to do something about that. And his comments are also bringing disrepute to his team.

A former 49er, Kwame Harris, was recently outed after he was charged with assaulting his ex-boyfriend after a fight at a Chinese restaurant over soy sauce and underpants.

How would Culliver treat Harris if they were teammates?

There's a difference in expressing opinion. If this was his Facebook, or twitter, or banter between friends, then that's one thing. He took his opinions on the national level, four days before the Superbowl.

He's obviously not the smartest. The comments over at JoeMyGod are pretty funny, I might add.

Pretending that opinions which differ from our own don't exist is delusional.

Forcing people to toe an official line is the province of dictators and political machines.

The 49'ers have made an "It gets better" ad. The team has a supportive "official position" on gays (phrasing!). Jim Harbaugh, the 49ers coach, has "been a pretty strong proponent of equal rights".

I hope that anyone who cares about the issue will see that this statement is the retrograde (and barely comprehensible) trash talk of this one dude--and nothing more. Let him stand by it and learn that lots of people feel differently--that's the way opinions change.

If it fires people up and causes a backlash of support for the Gays--great.

I guess I don't object to the management asking him to apologize for making an offensive comment, but that's as far as I would go, personally.

It also seems to me that he's not the smartest guy around. Artie Lange is a shock-jock--looking for sensational sound bites. Do we know to what extent Culliver was goaded into making a statement? It's not an excuse by any means for hate speech, but I'm curious if the unedited transcript of the interview is available.

I wonder if he was involved in the "It Gets Better" video. Honestly, I don't know how long he's been on the team. I'm not a big fan of sports in general, but I enjoy them when they're on. I don't actively scroll the channels or make plans to watch any game.

If he was involved in the video, then he's a huge hypocrite.

Point is, the NFL has a non-discrimination policy, that probably has something against speaking ill about teammates. He's probably broken at least one or two points on the policy. He can have whatever opinion he wants, but he shouldn't be allowed to go against policy. Fines, public apology, whatever. He broke the rules.

Hey Everybody! Here's the apology:

"The derogatory comments I made yesterday were a reflection of thoughts in my head, but they are not how I feel. It has taken me seeing them in print to realize that they are hurtful and ugly. Those discriminating feelings are truly not in my heart. Further, I apologize to those who I have hurt and offended, and I pledge to learn and grow from this experience.”

Yeah--the same guy who said "dem gays gotta get up outta here" also said "derogatory".

I feel SO MUCH BETTER.
