I know this issue has touched a few on the Board, so I thought this might be of interest:
"A drug used to prevent bones from thinning also offers millions of older women a powerful way to protect themselves against breast cancer, a large government-sponsored study has found.
The study of nearly 20,000 postmenopausal women found that raloxifene reduces their chance of developing breast cancer as effectively as tamoxifen, the only drug previously shown to reduce the risk, but is less likely to cause serious side effects such as uterine cancer and blood clots.
The findings indicate that raloxifene, sold under the brand name Evista, is a safer alternative for the estimated 9 million postmenopausal U.S. women at increased risk for breast cancer, experts said.

I'm absolutely convinced that if this were given the highest priority, a way would be found in our life times to kill this monster. So many great strides have been made in the recent past that my dear friend was sure a cure would be found in her lifetime. Sadly the cancer took her first. It shouldn't be allowed to take any others. I'm afraid that until the full force of the Federal Government gets behind it - with full funding! - that the movement forward will still be too slow.
We all need to do what we can. Fund the runners, click on the ribbons, write to the Congress persons and VOTE FOR THOSE WHO SUPPORT THE RESEARCH! and maybe our grandkids won't have to fight this battle too.
A click for life.

Posted: 4/18/06 at 12:48pmThis is indeed great news. The problem I personally feel with finding a cure is the business of medicine. I find it absolutely appalling that politicians are allowing drug companies to "Treat" a disease rather than cure it simply because the drug and treatment sales put money in pockets. But...that's just me. I really hope this is something that works - and encourages the expansion of research for others.
