Ramones ex-manager, stars' realtor murdered, police say
NEW YORK (CNN) -- Linda Stein, a former manager of the Ramones who later became known as "the Realtor for the stars," was found beaten to death in her posh Fifth Avenue apartment, police said Thursday.
Star Realtor Linda Stein's client list included Madonna, Sting, Michael Douglas and Angelina Jolie.
There was no indication of forced entry when police, responding to a 911 call, found Stein's body late Tuesday night, authorities said.
Stein, 62, was one of New York's top real estate brokers and was known for her list of celebrity clientele, which included Madonna, Sting, Michael Douglas and Angelina Jolie.
An autopsy found that Stein died from "blunt impact injuries of the head and neck," said Grace Brugess, spokeswoman for the medical examiner's office. Police have declared Stein's death a homicide. They declined to discuss possible suspects in the investigation.
"She had a tough exterior but she had a heart of gold," said Dottie Herman, a colleague and close friend. Stein had been struggling with breast cancer and "was a little wobbly on her feet some days," Herman said.
"I just assumed Linda fell and hit her head when I first heard about this, because I can't imagine anyone that would want to kill Linda," said, Herman, CEO of Prudential Douglas Elliman, where Stein worked.
Stein was formerly married to Seymour Stein, ex-president of Sire Records, according to The Associated Press. It was the Sire label which released records that vaulted the Ramones, Talking Heads and Madonna to fame in the 1970s and '80s. Watch report on the death of Linda Stein »
A former schoolteacher, she and Danny Fields co-managed the Ramones during the band's heyday, AP reported. Many credit her with bringing the Ramones to England for a concert on July 4, 1976, that contributed to the popularity of the punk scene in the UK, according to AP.
Stein and Fields left the Ramones in 1980, AP reported, leaving her to begin a stellar second career in residential real estate. Her client list included some of the same celebrities she rubbed shoulders with in the record industry.
"Her great joy in life was her first grandchild," a 3-year-old girl, Fields told the AP.
