Hey everyone! At my school we are doing an AIDS benefit and looking for material. We're having trouble finding plays, songs, and monologues that aren't geared at the gay community. We want to avoid playing into stereotypes, so I was wondering if anyone could provide some suggestions for material. Thank you all so much!

Anytime from Elegies by William Finn.

It's only a little geared towards the gay community, but then not really. Only if you put Monica and Mark (also from elegies) before it.

Do a miscast concert, where everyone gets to sing songs from roles they could never play! It's so much fun.

Almost any song or show that deals with loss, dying too soon, friends helping friends, grief, living in the moment, tackling problems one day at a time, etc., will resonate with the audience. "We Are a Family" from "Dreamgirls" and "In Whatever Time We Have" from "Children of Eden" have nothing whatever to do with AIDS or homosexuality in an overt way, but they translate so well in subtext that people forget the original context.

Have fun! And good luck.

Thanks Paul! I wish we could find more material from plays... we have stronger actors than singers...
