Yes. The best train is the Acela Express, but it's also the most expensive by leagues.
well when you buy cheap, you get cheap.

Yeah, and it wasn't bad. I actually enjoyed riding through the country side. Although the train trip isn't nearly as romantic as it looks in White Christmas!
No Amtrak trip could ever be referred to as "cheap." Nor can they usually be referred to as "on time."
I hate Amtrak.
I've done Amtrack from NYC to Washington and from Philly to Washington. It's really not that bad. I have a friend who commutes DAILY from Philly to Washington, using Amtrack. I've been telling her for years to just move their already...
Undiscovered.. I figured I would put the thread space to good use.
What would a average roundtrip cost?
That's for the five-hour trip (which is scheduled for 3 hours).
Thats not bad. Considering the hassle it would be to have to go to the airport . How is security?
I used to take Amtrak to NYC from DC in the early 90's. But for my upcoming trip I'm taking a bus... RT, no stops in between, and it's only $30.
hat kind of a crowd on the bus? ( asks the little queen from LA)
I guess mostly people like me... I've heard it's a good service, though.
People like you?
People who don't want to pay a lot of money to get to NYC...
That's a pretty large and diverse group...
'xactly.
I just don't want to be in a bus with highscool or college kids. Just my preference. Nothing against them. I just like quitet.

I've heard very good things about this service, plus it's really affordable.
DD, I take the bus to NYC from school. I've had less problems using Greyhound than I've ever had when I've flown.
DAME, the crowds I've seen have been diverse (there was even an Amish family on board when I went to NYC last month), but as a college student, I have to disagree with your assumption. College kids are more likely to put in their headphones, sleep through the whole trip and distract no one.
That washingtondeluxe bus hardly ever runs. I checked that schedule.
It is indeed Orange's right to sleep through the whole trip.

Oh, I'm sooo with you on the Amtrak hatred, Rath. I tried to take a simple Philly-to-New Jersey trip one time and not only was it not on time, there weren't any seats on the train. I had to sit on my duffle bag. I mean, yeah, it was Thanksgiving weekend, but what the hell? Trains don't have frickin' standing room.
Not to mention it was something like $45 for a trip that costs me less than $20 with a SEPTA-NJ Transit combination that always has seats available. Bastards.

Plum, I used to take it to Mass. all the time on trips to visit the fam - it was always SIGNIFICANTLY late, and they always RAISED prices during the holidays, which was also when they squeezed you in like sardines. It was when I had to stand from NYC to Providence that I started to take the bus instead.
Cheaper by half, and always on time.
