My boyfriend and I took on my younger brother's guitar and are refinishing it, and I just wanted to share some pictures of the pickguard, which I designed and painted over the last two days.
Wow! How cool! My son is a huge guitar enthusiast so I hear him playing every morning, noon, and night!

So is my boyfriend. He has at least a dozen guitars, one of which he sold to buy my birthday gift of tickets to Billy Elliot (which kills me...he's such a doll). We spent all day today painting and sanding and waiting. My hands are coated in red paint. I'll post a picture of the original guitar in a few.

This is the original guitar, and me being a creeper holding it for the camera. The guitar is from the 60s, and was probably, from what we can tell, a cheap instrument from a department store. It was my father's, then my brother's. Because my brother doesn't play, and because my boyfriend loves guitars so much, we brought it to his house and took it apart. Today we stripped the whole thing, polished all of the metal pieces, and painted the body and head of the guitar cherry red. It looks fabulous!
I've never done anything like this, but my boyfriend loved my paisley work on the pickguard so much that I'm buying him a fake pickguard for his Univox, and painting that for him. I love this!
Okay- first of all- you are adorable! Second of all- what a great boyfriend! My son has only 4 guitars but he's only 16. As I'm typing this, I can hear him playing his electric guitar- the sound that runs through my house EVERY evening! Can't wait to see your finished product! Thanks for sharing!

Thanks, Mom! I'll keep you updated. We're about to go sand before the final coat now.
We just bought our 14 year-old daughter her first guitar as a present for graduating middle school. She's expressed interest in it for quite awhile, so we hope she takes to it.
I took up the guitar at 18. It broke my heart to learn that I could never play lead. I could only strum chords, but at least I used that knowledge and ability to write songs.

This is what we did. We're still touching it up, thanks to some crappy paint that had a chemical reaction with the laquer we used. Boo.
Overall, I'm pleased with the product. Its so cool!
VERY COOL! Thanks for posting the finished product!

My boyfriend finally rewired the guitar and put on new strings...keep in mind, this is a cheapo instrument, so I'm wicked proud of him for making it sound so great!

The guitar looks great! Also, this is a total threadjack, but I'm loving the short hair on you! It totally suits your bone structure.

Thanks, Mom!
And Scott, thank you! My sister, whom I really don't get along with, tells me daily how bad she thinks it looks, and how ugly I am, so that's really nice to hear. You're a sweetie!
