I got into a bike accident the other day and broke my clavicle. It's not at hilarious as it sounds.

Anyway, the doctor prescribed me Vicodin as needed, and to be honest I'm a little wary of taking it. The pain's pretty bad, no over the counter drugs are working.

So, tell me your Vicodin stories. I would greatly appreciate it.

I know you. I know you. I know you.

A friend of mine gave me some when a toothache was unbearable and I had to wait 2 days before I could get to a dentist. It was heaven sent. My roommate also is taking it now due to a fall and hurting his face. He was scared at first but a week and a half later says he thanks God he had it.

You will not want to chew anyones face off, if that's what you are worried about.

I don't remember? haha

I took it at points where I wouldn't remember anyway, post getting hit by a car (also not as fun as it sounds) and post back surgery (see above getting hit by a car). I'm sure I would have not enjoyed life as much if I hadn't taken meds. I do remember being extremely tired while on it.

It did make my roommate incredibly loopy to the point where I felt like I was babysitting. 6 year old but at least his pain was gone.

Vicodin is fine in moderation. Don't take more than the recommended dosage and hope you don't get injured again anytime soon.

I say this because I am a dancer and have injured my body too many times and have had to have 2 shoulder surgeries an surgery on my acl in the course of a year and a half. I was prescribed vicodin every time I dislocated my shoulder before I had surgery then norco as well as a cast with an iv shooting morphine into my arm.

Then had to have my wisdom teeth out and was prescribed more Vicodin. When I stopped taking the Vicodin for my wisdom teeth I got really sick with flu like symptoms. Yes that wa withdrawal I was going through. I never abused drugs but was definitely going through hardcore withdrawal. I flushed all the pain meds down the toilet and kicked that habit cold turkey when I realized I must have been addicted...

Because of my situation I refuse to ever take pain meds except ibuprofen and the best medicine available. Marijuana.

NEVER, NEVER, under any circumstances, flush prescription pain meds down the toilet! -- There's a P.O. Box I can give you to mail them to.

In most cases, the vicodin they prescribe nowadays isn't the vicodin of old, anyway. No buzz, no "high" for most of us. It just makes the pain manageable. I've taken it off and on for everything from a pulled tooth to a herniated disk to migraines. Never had a problem and never took it long enough to suffer withdrawal symptoms.

Obviously, everyone is different, but I wouldn't worry unless you are planning to take it for months at a time. I certainly took it when I broke my toe and wouldn't hesitate in the case of a broken clavicle.

I agree, I have taken Vicodin when having extensive oral surgery. It does kill the pain but it didn't make me loopy and I am highly effected by drugs usually.

BTW, you should know that one of the complaints about vicodin is the amount of acetaminophen (basically Tylenol) it contains. I don't have any hard data, but there are rumors of people having liver problems if they drink while taking vicodin.

I'm not a doctor, so take this with a grain of salt. But it wouldn't hurt to abstain from alcohol (which is what the instructions for all painkillers and tranquilizers say) while you are taking vicodin.

In most cases it is very safe to take for a couple of weeks for pain. And studies have shown that you heal more rapidly if you are not in pain.

Do not drive if you are taking it. It's a DUI. If you develop a rash stop taking it and take some benadryl.

Taking as prescribed vicodin is safe. It comes in different doses, and it is a combination drug. Look at the label to verify how much acetaminophen is in your prescription. As you probably know, the larger of the two numbers is the amount of acetaminophen. If I were to guess I would assume that you have probably been written for a 5/325 or 5/500 dose (indicating 5mg hydrocodone, 325 or 500 mg acetaminophen). The FDA lowered the daily recommended max last year from 3000 mg to 4000mg to prevent liver damage. You mentioned that OTC meds werent helping, be sure to be mindful to the amount of acetaminophen you consumed from them in the equation as well when you determine how much youre taking in in a 24 hour period. The doses of 5mg Hydrocodone generally dont cause a lot of loopiness, 10 might. I was prescribed the 5mg formulary post op sinus surgery two years ago, at 105 pounds I didnt have any sensory or cognitive issues from it. Dont drink with it, or other narcotics. Chelsea Handler has been joking about drinking with her Percocets lately, dont. Both have central nervous system effects and you dont want to cause a synergic effect. Of course dont take it on an empty stomach (just a cracker or two is fine). It can cause nausea and vomiting and with a fractured clavicle, the kinesiology and body mechanics involved in such an action will cause you a lot of pain.

I took it after an extensive and invasive surgery I had and then after I had my wisdom teeth out. It really does help with the pain. It makes you a little loopy, but it alleviates the pain completely. Just make sure to wane off of it and then stop! Don't stay on it too long! Get well soon!

I was prescribed some a couple of years ago for tooth pain so severe that I couldn't sleep. It was easily the worst pain I've ever experienced in my life. The Vikes didn't help, not even a little bit. Tequila did.

I was prescribed some when I had all four of my wisdom teeth out at once. Like others have said, it didn't make me loopy or high. Just managed the pain.

Generally speaking @ my hospital we try to limit acetaminophen use to under 4 gms a day. Yes they r cancer patients which means their livers are usually compromised in some way ( life OR Chemo Or Rads)
but its a good rule to go by anyway. More is NOT necc better.

I had the shingles and the doctor wanted to prescribe me vicodin and I refused and I also had a wisdom tooth pulled and the dentist tried to prescribe it to me and I refused as well. They both thought I was crazy but I'd rather suffer through it then take painkillers. Updated On: 7/5/12 at 04:22 PM
