New York's over. Madonna says so: "Madonna, in this month's Vanity Fair "Green" issue, says that New York is "not the exciting place it used to be. It still has great energy; I still put my finger in the socket. But it doesn't feel alive, cracking with that synergy between the art world and music world and fashion world that was happening in the 80s."
So true, Madge, so true.

Yeah? Just a few years ago, she said this:
I don't like cities, but I like New York
Other places make me feel like a dork
Los Angeles is for people who sleep
Paris and London, baby you can keep
Baby you can keep (repeat 8x)
[Chorus:]
Other cities always make me mad
Other places always make me sad
No other city ever made me glad
Except New York
I love New York
I love New York
I love New York
If you don't like my attitude, then you can F-off
Just go to Texas, isn't that where they golf?
New York is not for little pussies who scream
If you can't stand the heat, then get off my street
Get off my street (repeat 8x)
[Chorus]
(Get off my street) (repeat 15x)
She lied to us through song. I hate that!

Calvin, her follow up song is titled "put my finger in the socket," its on her new album.
Its a retraction of sorts.

That's why it stings so Calvin- she USED to love New York. But New York isn't the exciting place it used to be. Lucky Madonna is still the same.

Well this just throws me into a complete tizzy.
So, now if you don't live in NY are you no longer a bitter queen?

I think living in New York, paying those absurd rents and knowing that it's "over" would make any queen bitter. But what do I know, I don't even live in New York.
Ont he bright side, if you live in New York you can go see Legally Blond any time you want!

Not ANY time.
Just last night, about 1 a.m., I was thinking: "I REALLY want to see 'Legally Blonde.' RIGHT NOW!"
But the Palace Theatre was empty. Yeah, I could watch the TV broadcast, but I could do that in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho!

I live in in NYC.
and agree with MAdonna 100%
there is no WAY in hell that NYC is as vibrant as it was in the early 80's.
times Square is ridiculous.
there is a lack of art..a lack of originality..and i totally get what madonna is saying.
I grew up in the 70's and spent most of my teens and 20's in the 80's in the coolest clubs,..the coolest spots..and tons of art, music and fashion was all over the board....everything now is generic and accessible..everyone looks the same...everyone goes to the same starbucks and generic outings. every restaurant and lounge that tries to be trendy is NOT trendy...and so on and so on.
she is absolutely right.
and in no way is a bitch about it.it's just the truth.

Calvin - I had happily forgotten those lyrics existed until now. Thanks I lot. I am mad instead of glad and that makes me sad.
And now it's time for all the "seedy prostitute and drug-ridden, needle-strewn and disease-infested Times Square was so much better" posts.
I enjoyed the NYC of the 90s, actually. It felt a bit safer than the 80s. But I have to admit my interest increasingly wanes with each visit in the new millenium. Other than visiting some nice friends and seeing a few shows, I would have little-to-no interest any more. And the skyrocketing hotel rates certainly don't help. No more annual weekly visits for us. A long weekend at most.

BUT you are able to RENT a DOG! For only $279 for a long weekend! What a deal! Or only $45 for a day (or any fraction thereof).
I don't live in New York (obviously). Can any one explain why you'd rent a dog??????????
And Yes I checked, it's not an April Fool

Posted: 3/31/08 at 1:16pmShe's right. The city's lost a lot to overdevelopment and high rents. Anything that isn't a bank/hedge fund/Starbucks is priced out of most neighborhoods. Even the 2nd Avenue Deli's relocated so that a Chase could be built in its place.

Look on the bright side -- my building owner went bankrupt, and now my rent's frozen while the building sits in the hands of the holding company. Sure, they'll probably eventually sell it, convert it to condos and kick us all out, but at least I didn't have to start paying an extra $50 a month this year!
And they're starting to eat each other. The Starbucks at 5th Avenue and 8th Street was just shut down to make way for a North Fork Bank.

Posted: 3/31/08 at 1:41pmYou can rent a dog because everyone knows chicks dig dogs and babies. It's more socially responsible than renting a baby.

I guess it depends on why you are renting it.
