I was there. It was great, but a little on the long side. I got there about 4:30 expecting it to be a madhouse, but there were barely enough people to fill one block. I was with friends only about 30 feet or so from the stage, so I had a great view. Apparently eventually there were 5 or 6 blocks filled according to what the speakers were saying, but being in the front, I had no idea. Again it was long. They could have cut a couple of the speakers. Mayor Bloomberg gave a great speech, as did Cynthia Nixon, and the NYC council speaker whose name I don't recall. The cast of Hair was great, Cheyenne Jackson sang "If I can dream", and Audra sang a lovely song at the very end that I didn't know. However, Douglas Carter Beane had the best line of the night, which I just made my sig.

Would it be shallow of me to say that the highlights of the rally were NOT the speeches of Governor David Patterson, Mayor Mike Bloomberg, Speaker Christine Quinn, Senator Tom Duane, Assemblyman Daniel O'Donnell, actress and soon-to-be same-sex-spouse Cynthia Nixon, actor and same-sex-spouse David Hyde Pierce or actors, same-sex-spouses and cute co-daddies-of-son-Samson Eric Sciotto and David Eggars...but that the highlights of the rally were the tight jeans worn, respectively, by Gavin Creel and Cheyenne Jackson?

A fun thing that is really good for grown-ups to know and for others to learn is that causes can be right and just and good and discussion of how good the guys looked onstage can happen at EXACTLY THE SAME TIME!! Both things can be true! Isn't that a MIND-blower?! That's the best lesson gay life (excuse me, "our cause") can teach the rest of the world: 1) Get the job done. 2) Don't be dull. 3) Laugh.

I didn't SAY their tight jeans were the highlight of the rally. I asked if it would be shallow if I said that. Clearly you think it WOULD be shallow, and that is your right.

Welcome to BroadwayWorld. We all go from shallow to deep, and we luxuriate in each other's shallowness. We like sparkly dances (as they say in [title of show]) and serious drama and reality television and things that are silly. Many of us (not all) are gay, and today was our day.

So (as they also say in [title of show]), suck it.
