Taking my cue from cruel_sandwich's latest thread-
What performances absolutely deserved Academy Award nominations... but didn't get them?
Malcolm McDowell, A Clockwork Orange - Pretty much the face of evil. But, seriously... A creepy, vivid, and irrepressible performance. His Alex manages to hold our attention, despite the horrible things he does.
Uma Thurman, Kill Bill: Vol. 2 - The quintessential action heroine. The Princess Leia/Ellen Ripley/Sarah Connor of the decade. She injected unforced charisma, athleticism, gravitas into this role, and the fact that she got zip for it is a crime. Even if you don't care for this film, keep this in mind: The character is an icon, and deservedly so. Moviegoers will remember her for decades.
Ewan McGregor, Moulin Rouge - In this crazy-ass spectacle of a movie, he generously donated to us his depth, warmth, determination, innocence, and charmingly untrained vocals. I'm fully convinced that he's the only actor in the world for this role.
Anthony Perkins, Psycho - An utterly original characterization. The constantly wandering eyes, the nervous chuckle, the menace, and the incessant candy chomping. A sympathetic villain.
I'm sure there's many more.

shirley maclaine is POSTCARDS FROM THE EDGE . that was criminal. a sin of ommission.
I was insanely pissed when Sean Astin didn't get nominated for Return of the King.
I agree with Sean Astin's snub...That is, he deserved a nomination. Also, the biggest sin ever was Hank Azaria not getting naminated for THE BIRDCAGE!
I realize I am breaking the rule of the thread, but the biggest Academy Award omission has to be Grace Kelly winning over Judy Garland's performance in A Star Is Born, which of course, she was nominated for.
This is the biggest Academy Award f*ck up in the history of the world.
I agree with Perkins in PSYCHO. Also, Kathy Bates in DOLORES CLAIBORNE and Julie Andrews in STAR!, DUET FOR ONE and THAT'S LIFE, Robert Shaw in JAWS, Gary Oldman in SID AND NANCY.
I'm sure there are more, but these spring readily to mind.
DOLLY READ in "Beyond the Valley of the Dolls".
She wuz robbed I tell ya.
Especially with her line delivery of "I'm a capitalist, baby. I work for a living, not suck off somebody else."
That along with "Ferns in the biffy? Class!", "Up yours ratso!" and "I'll take 1/2 a million dollars man! And not a penny less!"
Oh and who could forget....
"Porter, why don't you lose your laundry?"
Russell Crowe in LA Confidential.
Check out Jennifer Jason Leigh's performance in the B-movie thriller HEART OF MIDNIGHT. Her best performance.
Also, the forever underrated Martha Plimpton in EYE OF GOD.
Chloe Webb and Gary Oldman in SID AND NANCY
Maggie Smith in THE LONELY PASSION OF JUDITH HEARNE (her best film performance)
Dustin Hoffman in STRAIGHT TIME
Wait a minute... Maggie Smith wasn't nominated for ...Judith Hearne? What is wrong with people?!
Entertainment Weekley did a huge story on this last year:
Some included, that I agree with:
Judy Garland, OZ
and more recently:
Jennifer Connolly, REQUIEM FOR A DREAM
Michelle Yeoh, CROUCHING TIGER

Judy wasn't even NOMINATED for OZ?
I concur with Perkins in Psycho.
This may sound dumb, but Jim Carrey in The Grinch.
Eugene Levy in A Mighty Wind
Leading Actor Joined: 5/16/03
Donald Sutherland in "Ordinary People" - a very wonderful performance.
Judy got a special small oscar as Best Juvenile Performance for Oz, but didnt get a nomination.
Agree most strongly so far with Jennifer Connelly in Requiem for a Dream...should've been up for best pic, too.

Marilyn Monroe in "Some Like it Hot"
More recently, Reese Witherspoon in "Election" (hell, I would have given her an Oscar for "Freeway"), and Ian Holm and Sarah Polley in "The Sweet Hereafter."
And I second Kathy Bates for "Dolores Claiborne," but I’d like to add Jennifer Jason Leigh and (especially) Judy Parfitt.
