I worked in a Box Office for a theatre that rented out to dance schools for recitals. The morning the tickets went on sale was always more insane than anything I've ever seen.

Once a mother hid in the ladies' room the day before and slept there overnight. The rest of them camp out on the sidewalk. An hour before we open the lobby, she crept out of the ladies' room, went to the front door, opened it a crack and taunted the other mothers by saying, "they should be letting you in soon, haha." Of course they all called the dance school as soon as they got home and ratted her out. Her daughter was banned from all classes for life.

One year they were all lined up quietly at the front door. The lobby was open, but the first person there had decided to start the line outside. Well some oblivious father strolls by them. Enters through the door next to them and walks up to the Box Office window and waits.

When they spot him, they all rush in and form the line behind him, saying nothing. Ten minutes later, I pull up the venitian blinds at the counter stations. The crowd immediately starts barking and screeching to me that the first guy in line cheated! They caused such a stir! I was glad I was behind glass!

I said, "so you waited until I opened to deal with it?" Really. I was amazed that they stood silent behind him all that time and expected me to sort it all out.

I told them I was going to close again and would reopen once they were able to sort it all out and start acting like adults. I then pulled the blind closed. I could see through he blinds that they immediately swarmed around the guy and started clucking and pecking at him like chickens until he left and went to the back of the line. I then heard a timid little knock on the window.

I have very little faith in mankind after working there.

Well the video shows that Wal Mart should have known there would be problems. From what I understand the last thing Wal Mart wants to spend money on is security. I hope this young man's family sues for millions.

I may not know a lot about theater but I know that I love it.

My girlfriend drug me out this morning to go to Target. Its apparently a family tradition for her as her parents came with us. I'd never done it before and I'll never do it again. The line had to be 1/3 of a mile to get into the store and people were rushing in. The lady a little ahead of me fell down and people were rushing past her and a few even stepped on her. I stopped, helped her up and moved to the side, but people were walking/running by laughing at her. I told my girlfriend when we left that if she wants to go next year, fine, but I'll keep my family tradition up of sleeping in, drinking coffee and reading the paper in my robe. I'd never seen anything like it, and I hope I never do again.

With regards to artscallion's story, I queued up at a theatre for a day ticket last week. I was second in the queue, but the direction got a little skewed and the third gentleman in the queue stood on the other side of the first gentleman in the queue. So with your back to the theatre, the queue looked kinda like:

*-2-1-3-4-5-etc.

Occasionally, someone would attempt to queue on my left, where the asterisk is. I would wait a minute to see if they looked like they were hanging around, then direct them kindly to the correct end of the queue. And when the box office opened, although I could've taken advantage of the confusion to pretend I was head of the queue, I stood back to make sure the guy who arrived before me went in before me.

So this thread has really given me two reasons to be especially thankful I'm English:

1) We don't do Thanksgiving so don't have this Black Friday malarkey. Hell, I've even had good shopping days on Christmas Eve, Boxing Day, all manner of days where you might expect a crowd of people looking for a bargain, and not once have I witnessed a crowd like the ones you hear about in the US on Black Friday.

2) We're just naturally AWESOME at queueing. No confusions there! ^_^

I went to my local Kohl's. Crowded, but very organized. Of course, they opened at 4am (WTF?) and I went at 8am. In line for less than 30 minutes, pretty good for Black Friday.

Diva, you and I thought the same thing-I'm watching this woman stay on the ground and get trampled on while she insisted on putting the wig back on. WTF?????

It's hard to believe that video but we know it's real. I was thinking of doing some errands tomorrow, in stores, but that video changed my mind.

That is really sad. Walmart definitely could have done something to control the crowd, but again, people are just rude. It's ridiculous. There is absolutely no reason to be pushing and shoving each other. It's crowds like that which make me glad I decided to do my shopping ahead of time.

And sadly, people do not just behave this way at black friday sales. At the yard sale my animal shelter group held back in October, people were running to get their hands on items first. However, there was so much stuff, I don't see how people would be walking out of there with nothing, even if they did come later in the day. These people also had perfectly good clothing thrown all over the ground like it didn't matter. People who do that should be banned from sales if they are not going to have respect for items.

Also, I agree and it makes me sick that people could care less about an emergency situation over shopping. When I ran the trading post at a summer camp and was ordered to close for practically a whole afternoon due to some major emergencies, people looked at me like I had 2 heads when I had to kick them out. I was not even rude about it.

Lol SNAFU! Isn't that sad, that the most important thing to that woman is her wig?
I saw them loading her in to an ambulance howling in pain, in the video.

The above video = prime evidence in the current case.

Besides the stampede stuff....letting people camp out all night on the premises? In the cold? Is that not irresponsible and dangerous as well?

Why does this remind me so much of "Lord of the Flies?"

Instead of having a bunch of boys trapped on an island, try trapping a bunch of adults in a shopping center. (Oh, I hope no reality show producers are reading this.)

It's LORD OF THE FLIES mixed with DAY OF THE LOCUST and just a soupcon of SUDDENLY, LAST SUMMER. Think I'm exaggerating? Next year, there will be food on sale, and if there aren't enough hams to go around, someone will get partially eaten.

The store should not be responsible for people who decide they must skip Thanksgiving to camp out for the entire day. Those people are just nuts. Whatever happens to them out there is their own fault. Nobody told them they had to sit out and wait.

What happened to the employee IS THE RESPONSIBILITY of WalMart

If something happens on store property, then yeah, the store is liable for what happened to the employee. The customers, however, no. For the employee's family, it's an open and shut lawsuit. Walmart had better not try to settle by giving the family some lame ass discounts or whatever. If they try that, I hope the family tells the media.

People are indeed rude and entitled and neanderthal. The high tech electronics that the human race has managed to invent that caused this whole situation don't make people any more advanced or civilized. The same lessons are learned over and over again.
