Good point.
My hope is that since they can do seamless branching on BD, the disc would include both versions... just like the Close Encounters BD has all three versions (branching to the various scenes that were included or cut).

Posted: 10/3/08 at 7:37pmThat's fantastic. Can a BRD hold a 4 hour film? LOTR extended and I believe KK were two disc per film.

They could fit it on a dual layer (50 GB) disc... but it depends on if anyone would think that was compromising the compression to do that. I think they'd still be fine, since many 2 hour movies now are on one single-layer BD.
But you know the mentality of 2 discs = more money they can charge you.
So they'd probably split it... which would kill the "both versions" idea.
If I were them I'd please the fans and do it all on one disc, and then all the bonus (non-over-feature) content on a second disc.

dammit!!! must... buy... BD... player!
are they still like $500?
I thought BDs were supposed to hold like 25gb-50gb? Doesnt that mean long films like LOTR should be able to fit on 1 disc? plus special features... i would think more than 1 movie could fit on the disc...

Ok, I'm not too proud to own up to my ignorance. Can someone walk me through the whole Blu-Ray thing?
In addition to being ignorant, I guess I'm too lazy to read up and figure it out for myself.
Someone nice, please?

Blu-ray Disc (BD) is a hi-definition format disc. It's a DVD on steroids, Reg. But you need an HD TV first.
The HD format uses up a lot of disc space, cubanpab, so while 25-50 GB sounds like a lot, when it's HD content, that space is used up very quickly. Similar to DVDs with single and dual layers.
However, if you were to put regular, standard-def content on a Blu-ray Disc, you could (for example) put the entire series (all seasons) of "Friends" on a single dual-layered BD.
Standard def (NTSC-DV) video is 720x480 pixels.
High definition (at full rez) is 1920x1080 pixels. That's a huge difference.

I know they're both nice (and intelligent), Miss P.
You, by the way, are like fairy-godmother nice.
So, unless I want to toss out my not top-of-the-line-but-not-cheap LCD TV, I just want to forget it, right?
But is there a threat of it's taking over, and I'm suddenly Beta Max with my plain ol' DVDs?

Posted: 10/3/08 at 10:22pmExcept if and when you do decide to go blu-ray, you can still play your regular dvds on it, and they'll still look better.

Aw, Reg. That is so sweet! (I also noticed that Phyllis and CP are here. Add YOU to that and this thread has almost all of my favorite guys! Sorry, CATS, no offense. I just don't know you...I'm sure you're nice too.)
Anyway, enough about me...do you think I'LL like blu-ray?
Okay, that was a cheap vaudeville joke, but seriously, I had no idea that regular DVDs will work AND look better on blu-ray. (Reg, you and I are dinosaurs!)
So, I watched that documentary about Disneyland on blu-ray, Besty?

Aww, bachatcha, Miss P.
That's great news, Besty. I was afraid it was either/or.
Not up to replacing my TV yet (though I do yearn for a bigger one*).
Thanks for the info.
*No cracks, please

Posted: 10/3/08 at 10:42pmOh, Reg, we all yearn for bigger ones. It's just human nature. If only we could be happy with the one we look at every night before falling asleep.

Posted: 10/3/08 at 11:06pmi'm hoping this holiday that the BD players will drop down to reasonable prices... i'm still trying to convince my wife that we "need" a PS3 more than we "need" groceries... she's not buying it. not sure why.

Posted: 10/3/08 at 11:14pmReg, I think the fear is more that BD is going to become the 21st Century Betamax. It is having trouble finding acceptance. People are more than happy with standard DVD, even those people who have HDTVs. The fact is, technology changes, way too fast. I mean, why can't we just download HD films? How far away is that, really? And, the players and discs are way too expensive. Especially for most people, who just don't care about it. To be perfectly honest, I don't care about it, and it shocks people who know me. I went laserdisc in 1979, because I was unhappy with the quality of videotape! But, to be honest, the difference between standard television broadcast and HDTV broadcast is like the difference between black and white and color, to me; but the difference between standard DVD on a HDTV monitor and Blu-ray on that same monitor isn't all that impressive to me. I know it's better, but I just don't care. It's not better enough for me, and I'm one of those people who they, supposedly, don't have to convince. All of this is to say, I wouldn't worry about being left in the dust with my standard DVDs if I were you.

I love my PS3. And, now, they have a new 80G that plays PS2 and PS1 games (I could weep--I should have waited). But anyway, I love BluRay movies and that reg DVDs get upgraded to almost BD quality--at least they fill the screen like a BD.
And HDTV is the bomb! Make sure your TV is 1080p. P is the important part.
