it's not near a theatre but take the train down to West 4th, walk up to 8th and on the corner of 8th and 6th there's a wonderful li'l hole in the wall called Gray's Papaya. Cheap Hot Dogs and OJ and fruit drinks....

Mars 2112 was not good i went right before i saw Wicked. It was a rainforest cafe but the future with walking aliens and no storms.
Joe Allen's. Period. End of sentence.
There is a gray's papaya by me on 72nd and Amsterdam.
I also vote for Ollie's for good and cheap chinese.
John's pizzeria is a nice italian restaurant on 44th for sit down.
For serving yourself- If you walk east on 50th street, there is a Au Bon Pain which I like, and a NYC marketplace with all kinds of different foods. You can also walk uptown to 59th to the Time Warner Building to the food court and get pretty much anything from italian to sushi to salad to indian to mexican to deli to bakery. And you pay by weight, so take whatever you want.
Lastly- this is cheap- there is a hooters I think on 55th or so, and it has decent cheap food (I'm not commenting on the servers).
Cheap is defined in many ways.
Good cheap diner- Edison Cafe, in the Edison Hotel. They have great homemade soup.
Cheap Chinese- Tea Den, 54 or 55th 8th avenue. Near Newsical.
Ollies is also good in Times Square. I prefer Chinatown.
Mandarin for Dim Sum
May May- Dumplings
Wo hop- Steamed Shrimp dumplings mott street
While in chinatown pick up a chinatown guide in the Hotel Edison, Marriott Marquis, Bryant Park Hotel.
Film Center Cafe- Great champagne brunch for 11.00 Sat- Sun.
Great eggs, burgers, salads and the salmon on a bagel is tasty. Not a great bagel but great mimosa's.
Carmines- Great for sharing- Italian one dish serves four.
TonyDiNapoli- Best bellini in Times Square(Frozen Bellini)

Curtain, you are my hero!
I'm really hungry now.
Ooooh, I enjoy L&L. You really can't beat the mini-BBQ chicken! I swear it's not that much smaller than the regular, and it's $3-4 cheaper (besides, it doesn't reheat that well, so why bother getting the larger one?!)
