Christina Ricci to play "Trixie" in Speed Racer film

This should be a hoot!

The last time Christina Ricci starred in a certified blockbuster was in 1999's "Sleepy Hollow." And although she's gained critical acclaim for her performances in independent films such as "The Opposite of Sex" and "Monster," her lack of commercial credits is somewhat surprising for an actress who began her career with "The Addams Family" and "Casper." Although those hits had a supernatural connection, Ricci's return to big-event movies won't involve ghosts but will instead deal with fast cars -- very fast cars. No, Ricci isn't starring in a new sequel to "The Fast and the Furious." Instead, Warner Bros. announced last week that Ricci will join the cast of "Speed Racer," the movie adaptation of the '60s animated TV series. Ricci will play the important part of Trixie, Speed Racer's girlfriend. Emile Hirsch had previously been announced as playing the title character (beating out the likes of Zac Efron), and Hirsch will get some talented co-stars besides Ricci. John Goodman is on board to play Pops, a racecar owner and builder, and Susan Sarandon will play Pop's wife, the backbone of Speed Racer's Mach 5 Go Racing Team. What makes this Joel Silver production stand out from the usual family fare are the writers and directors: The Wachowski Bros., who still intend bring the film in with a G rating. That's right, the creators of "The Matrix" and "Bound" are making the hippest family flick ever -- or at least that's what Warner Bros. hopes. "Racer" is expected to begin shooting this summer in Berlin for a summer 2008 release.
