I need a song for my college audition. I already went through the audition songs post, and didn't find anything I liked.
I have my one classical song and my one contemporary upbeat song, but I can't pick a pre-1970's ballad.
My original choice was I Remember Sky from Evening Primrose, but then I read about how it's a bad idea to use Sondheim, so I changed my mind about that.
I consider myself a mezzo, but I can go as high as Christine's last note in Phantom (of The Opera), and as low as a G below middle C (I really can't go lower than that.)
So I need a ballad that's pre-1970's.
My ideas are:
Once You Lose Your Heart from Me and My Girl
I've Never Said I Love You from Dear World
Boys and Girls Like You and Me from R&H (It was used in pretty much EVERYTHING, does this even count as a ballad?)
Possibly Hold On from Secret Garden, but that seems to be Overdone, and it's not really a ballad.
If anyone has any other ideas, or thinks that one of these songs will be best in terms of uniqueness/showing off range, please let me know.
[I'm showing my high range in my classical song, and I'm belting in my contemporary song.]
Thank you in advance!

Ribbons Down My Back - Hello Dolly
[Nota bene - in this song you are a young widow who is longing for love again. Build the song, don't just give all the phrases equal value. It is sung by a dramatic soprano on the 1964 cast recording, but take it down.]
Also there is a genre of role sometimes referred to as the second-bitch-lead. These roles are not always classically bitchy, but they are worlds more interesting than the soprano leads. There is often a comic edge. They are also often mezzos. Examples are Carrie in Carousel or Ado Annie in Oklahoma.
If you go to many of the classic musicals, there is a second-lead who is fun.
