I really like this director. I rewatched Flirting with Disaster today and realized how funny and cool it was. I still need to see Spanking the Monkey.

I think FLIRTING is a masterpiece, levels above many comedies of the same vintage that got more attention. It manages to start high, spiral into dizzying near farcical heights while always maintaining a kind of gritty reality check (the extraordinary sequence with Celia Weston) And then -- what a third act with Lily and Alan Alda. It's stunningly sharp-edged comedy, and few people know that Russell won an award from the National Adoption Counsel for its honest portrayal of the the birthparent search and the (real, non-soapy) ramifications.
And like AFTER HOURS, think it might make a helluva musical. Mr. Russell is a true iconoclast, a filmmaker like no other. Even when I don't respond (HUCKABEES I just didn't get), I marvel at his uniqueness and unwillingness to cater to an audience's comfort zones.
