Do you realize that one of the following scenarios could occur:
Bush could get president with Edwards being elected vice-president
Edwards could get elected president, thereby passing both Bush & Kerry
I was actually talking about this in my history class. My teacher kept insisting that it was impossible, when it is possible.
It would be really creepy if that did happen, though.

If the electoral college is tied, the House and Senate decide. The House (largely Republican) chooses the president and is expected to vote Bush, the Senate (largely Democrat) chooses the vice-president and thereby would most likely choose Edwards.

This is how Edwards would become President:
If the House cannot select someone by January 20th then the Vice President selected by the Senate will become acting President until the House can make a selection. Thus, if the Democrats in the Senate have succeeded in selecting John Edwards as Vice President it would be in their interest to continue a deadlock in the House for as long as possible so that Edwards could become acting President.
Very insightful, I had no idea. Was this mentioned on the news recently or is this something you already knew?

It was on the news last night. I knew the part about if there was a tie in electoral college. I didn't know the part about how Edwards could become president.
Thanks. I don't ever remember this being mentioned in American History in school, either.
Edwards would make a good president. It's Cheney I worried about. Bush just makes me angry, but Cheney actually scares me.

Didn't something along those lines happen very early in our country's history? Maybe around the time of the second Adams or Jackson? Or maybe it was Jefferson...
Well Plum in our country's earliest history election of the president was different. There were no vice-presidential candidates. Whoever came in second place in the election became vice-president. It caused a huge mess as I believe several presidents and vice-presidents couldn't stand each other so it was counterprodutive. Hence the sysytem we have now. (I believe Jefferson was VP under Adams and hated him. Correct me if I am wrong.)
