Posted: 9/3/06 at 1:15amOk so this really pisses me off!!!!! There's this guy in my school who ALWAYS gets the leads in the musicals and drama's. He's ok but honestly everyone thinks hes this amazing force and he's not! the only role he did an amazing job with was John Proctor in the Crucible and everyone always assumes hes going to get the lead this year and the lead whenever! He's pretty much teachers pet and is like her little assistant and now he's president of the drama club and so he's really close with the head director and don't get me wrong hes ok but not AMAZING! and everyone thinks hes some acting god and he thinks that having all these close personal ties with the director hes going to go places! In my opinon if he never has to work for anything then he's going to get a wakeup call come college time!! URR I JUST HATE THAT i mean not every role in the musical and drama can't always be hand made for him!! BUT yeah i'm very excited that our musical is kiss me kate this year because he'll probably go for the lead and hes a tenor and i think the guy lead is either a bass or baritone! urr that pisses me off anyone else does that piss you off

Venting is good.
Unfortunatley, most of us here have this problem, and the only thing we can do about it is, whenever there's an audition, give it our best shot.
and don't worry, I find that people who work hard their whole life find that success comes with much more gratification and will get you MUCH further than those who are handed things on a silver plate their whole life.
Hope that helps!

Posted: 9/3/06 at 10:39amyeah i have to same exact problem. we just did grease last year, and of course this kid was danny. but the problem was...he walked out of his audition. yes u read that correctly, he walked out and still got the lead. everyone was shocked...and when i went up to the director and asked what the hell happened there...her excuss was that he looked the part. and i was shocked. she gave me this "you have the best voice in our school, but i cant give u the part because u dont look it" i almost ****ing killed her. this was rediculus. and when it came down to the performance...he was terrible. absolutly terrible. so we are doing footloose this year and yet again he wants the lead. but i swear to god if he gets that part, im not gonna even do the play, i could have more fun at a community theatre show.

Posted: 9/3/06 at 11:11amI understand how frustrating it can be, nate, but you really can't let it bother you. The reality is that this happens in theatre EVERYwhere, in h/s, in college, in community theatre, and in professional theatre. You have to learn how to handle it if you want a career onstage because it only gets worse as you get older and more involved in the theatre world. Casting is almost never JUST about the most talented person auditioning.

Posted: 9/3/06 at 11:20amyeah but there are better ppl out there more suited for the roles than him! he just gets them because hes close with the directors normally it doesnt bother me lol but iono lately i go tmad

If you're still in high school, than my advice would be, in college, introduce yourself personally to the directors and theatre heads before auditions start, so that they at least are familiar with you.
Although he's lucky now, he'll eventually have to learn how to work hard for his roles like the rest of us, and that may come as a shock for him.
And don't worry, we all get mad about this stuff, you're certainly not alone there!

Posted: 9/3/06 at 2:07pmhe could be, but if he isnt... prove everyone else wrong. this is the kind of person i get determined to knock out. :-p

Posted: 9/3/06 at 2:16pmHaha sorry!! When I vent I tend to forget about punctuation. I'm not saying he's terrible.....he has a good voice....and can act ok....and dance ok, but that's about it! Everyone thinks he is the only one who can play these roles and well he's not! His voice isn't something that's ultra special so yeah!

Posted: 9/3/06 at 2:26pmYes I agree. I hate it. Every single show in my school is chosen because of one person. No else ever gets a chance.

Posted: 9/3/06 at 8:36pmIt's true. There is a difference between someone getting cast over and over because of talent, and being cast as priority. Also, you can really see through it too, no matter how the directors try to hide it. It's very obvious when you know that casting is based on "outside" relationships.

Posted: 9/3/06 at 8:50pmIt was really bad in high school. I've only been in college for a couple weeks but from what I saw by the casting for the fall shows, it was based on talent.

Posted: 9/6/06 at 9:20amHer mother is a teacher at my high school. She gets roles, even though her acting has literally made people cringe. I don't get roles, even though I received awards in three different monologue/scene competitions. Honestly though, I don't care if I get the role. I just want someone who deserves the role to get it so the works of everyone from Shakespeare to Rodgers and Hammerstein are not forever mutilated by a girl who can't sing, act, or dance. Venting my problems to complete strangers does feel good. Thanks!

I have a good friend, and I really do like him, but I've been living in his shadow for 5 years, and I've know him for, well, 5 years.
In any other school I'd be up for the lead roles and I'd be top of the class, but in my school, we have him. I have a high IQ, his is that little bit higher. I can do this, he can do it just that little bit longer/better/bigger whatever. But, although he does deserve most of what he gets, he isn't a good actor. He just puts on accents (and not great ones IMHO) and over does things. He's very wooden on stage. However, I play the clarinet, and so they always say, oh Andrew, you can just go play the clarient or something, you're so good in that way, we'll just let [insert my friend's name] play the lead role. Not because he's the best, but because he can't do anything else. Anything apart from learning off lines and being very wooden while delivering them. Ughh...

Posted: 9/6/06 at 6:44pmUnfortunately, this is a reality of high school. From my experience, the only way to get around it is good old-fashioned sucking up to whomever is casting at the moment. I have more theater experience than most people at my school, but was not cast in a recent show (despite what even the director admitted to be a killer audition) simply because I'm new, and not yet amongst the group of kids who are seriously considered for shows (worsened by being an ingenue, making it hard to "ease into" a department with supporting roles). Do whatever you can to get into that "inner circle," and it'll pay off!

!!! I have the same problem! If I ever get into the musical then I usually have the music department fighting for me so I can do the pit. Blah.

Posted: 9/6/06 at 7:56pmthe 2 leads happen to be the director's son and only private student. 2 years in a row. Nothing you can do about it though.

Posted: 9/7/06 at 1:18amIt sucks but its a part of theater :-/ everyones gotta go through this at least once! just take it as a learning experience and move on. Even though that's super hard to do. I just always think to myself "everything happens for a reason"...then again I get picked on for being annoyingly optimistic hahhaa.
