Posted: 5/24/09 at 9:52pmI was STOKED for this movie until I saw the lastest preview and saw it was rated PG-13.

Posted: 5/24/09 at 9:56pmWhat I've heard from many reviews is that the rating does nothing to dilute the crazy sh*t that goes down in the movie. Apparantly, while there are some grimy scenes, it's more about the suspense than anything else.

Posted: 5/24/09 at 11:47pmIt's Raimi horror movie. That puts it in a WHOLE other category. lol

I must say, I'm more than a little interested. The poster is what first caught my eye - a blonde woman in obvious distress, an apparently-evil hand grabbing her throat from down below, and a gloriously unsubtle horror-movie title? Sounds like Sammy's returning to his roots, and what jolly fun roots they were! If it's anything other than tremendous fun, I shall be VERY disappointed.

Posted: 5/25/09 at 1:51pmThe fact that it's PG-13 doesn't mean anything. You don't need a ton of gore and bad language to make a movie scary.

Posted: 5/25/09 at 1:57pmThis is the 1st horror movie in a very long time that has caught my attention with its trailers. I stopped going to see horror movies when they became really gory. Just give me good scares and I am fine!

Posted: 5/25/09 at 3:46pmI'm predicting crap, though I'll still go see it.

Posted: 5/25/09 at 3:55pm1st horror movie I've really been interested in since "Shawn of the Dead"

Posted: 5/25/09 at 3:56pmHoly, I just read it's reviews. Now I'm little more excited for the film.

When did you see this one, Borstal? :P
I must say, I'm probably going to stick with Spain for my horror movies from now on. I haven't been properly scared by a film for a good long while, but The Orphanage and [rec], despite their lack of proper scares, were rather wonderful films. Japanese horror films are sooooooooo last century!

Posted: 5/25/09 at 4:43pmI haven't seen it. I was saying that with hope. But it really does seem like the best horror of the last ten years or more have all come from abroad. Get with it, Hollywood!

The Onion via Cannes gave it an appreciative review:
Drag Me to Hell: This opens on Friday, so I won?t spend a lot of time on it since you?ll soon be inundated by proper reviews. As widely reported, it?s a return to Sam Raimi?s shlock-horror roots, replete with gross-out gags and devoid of any kind of subtlety; all you need to know about the plot is that it involves an ambitious bank teller whose designs on an assistant-manager position are hampered by a pesky Gypsy curse. Alison Lohman is no Bruce Campbell (though, amazingly, there?s one key shot in which she kind of looks like Bruce Campbell), but she?s totally game and the film as a whole is a dopey stylized good time. But you leave the theater on a higher note than that suggests, because the ending is sensational. I will say no more; do your best to avoid spoilers. Grade: B

Posted: 5/25/09 at 5:47pmThank God we have Raimi back where he belongs. Maybe he'll stick with horror films and turn the Spider-Man series over to another director, because the third installment only went to show how creatively muddled his brain was.

Posted: 5/25/09 at 9:34pmAs Bruce Campbell says, there is no such thing as a PG-13 horror movie.

I thought it was the best of the three films. Slightly better than the first one, and about a million times better that the second.
I'm very much looking forward to Drag Me to Hell. It looks like a lot of fun, plus I've never disliked Justin Long in anything I've seen.

Posted: 5/26/09 at 3:39pmI liked Spiderman 1 and 2. Three was entertaining, but a letdown. I've only seen the first Evil Dead movie and wasn't motivated to watch the others. BUT, I really enjoyed A Simple Plan and The Gift is one of my favorite Horror/Suspense films. After watching the trailer (and coming off the heels of viewing The Haunting of Molly Hartley and The Uninvited last weekend), Drag Me to Hell looks like a fun horror flick.

Posted: 5/26/09 at 3:41pmYou NEED to see Evil Dead 3 (AKA "Army of Darkness" & "Bruce Campbell V. The Army of Darkness") It is hilarious!

The very best Evil Dead movie is Evil Dead 2. The first leaned a little too close to seriousness, the third a little too close to silliness. The second was perfectly positioned between seriousness and silliness, and also showcased Raimi at his best. Raimi at his best, for anyone just joining us, is when he's whaling on Bruce Campbell in the name of cinema. :3
There were waaay too many characters sharing screentime in the first movie, it visibly improved as the body count got higher. While there were quite a few characters in the second movie, Campbell still got the real lion's share of screentime.
Evil Dead 2 works well as a standalone as well, reworking and cutting down the first movie into the first few minutes, and setting up the third at the end, but in a "haha, sucks to be you!" way that didn't necessarily need concluding (although I did enjoy the conclusion that was Army of Darkness, even though I'm conflicted between the hilarious quotability of the US ending and the less fun but more satisfying original ending as seen here in the UK).
