Posted: 7/3/06 at 12:17amOh no! I hope he'll be okay. I really, really like Roger Ebert, even when I disagree with him. It's so obvious he does what he does out of pure love for the movies.

Posted: 7/3/06 at 12:39amI agree that all his comments CLEARLY come from a love of the movies - not something we see in theater critics very often. I sometimes think he's right on, sometimes way off in his criticism, but I always admire the fact that he defends his position well and REALLY knows what he's talking about when he talks about films.

Ebert is amazing. Nothing is better than reviews of movies he hates. He really knows how to write, and has an obvious passion for movies. Hope he is doing better.

I haven't always agreed with Ebert, but I have ALWAYS admired and respected him. He is that rare movie critic who actually has a passion for film and isn't afraid to articulate it.
So many others in his field, including his on-screen partner Richard Roeper (aka "Dweebert" of the Ebert & Dweebert Show), look like they can't WAIT to finish their sentences so they can race back to their laptops, Blackberries, and lattes. It's disgusting, and disheartening, and they don't even realize what "walking cliches" they are.
I hope that Ebert recovers soon and completely. We need people like him around, if for no other reason than to save us from the hoards of snarky, know-nothing posers who pass for "industry" journalists. They're a dime a dozen, and completely interchangeable in both opinions and skill.
Ebert isn't so easily replaced, though. I wish him well.

Ebert on the movie NORTH...one of my favorite reviews ever
I hated this movie. Hated hated hated hated hated this movie. Hated it. Hated every simpering stupid vacant audience-insulting moment of it. Hated the sensibility that thought anyone would like it. Hated the implied insult to the audience by its belief that anyone would be entertained by it.

Yay! According to his wife, he's doing well!
"I am happy to report that Roger is in stable condition and is improving each day. He has an excellent medical team led by Doctors Harold Pelzer, Neil Fine and Robert Havey, and they are optimistic about his recovery. We have every confidence in their abilities."

He isn't doing so well.

August 18, 2006 -- FILM critic Roger Ebert has suffered another health setback - but friends and co-workers of the "Ebert & Roeper" co-host remain guardedly optimistic about his condition.
Ebert, who has been hospitalized in Chicago since June, underwent his third surgery on Aug. 6, it was revealed yesterday.
He was treated for a recurrence of salivary cancer in June.
His wife, Chaz, characterized the latest procedure as "minor" on Ebert's Web site, but media insiders are buzzing that doctors removed at least part of his jaw and that the critic's recovery could take many months.

I live in CHicago and last night on the news they released a statement from Ebert. Basically said he's recovering but needs physically therapy from being bedridden for so long, and speech therapy because part of his jawbone has been removed. Also, the setback he encountered involved a blot clot or arterty bursting (sorry, don't recall which) near the jawbone...

"CHICAGO, Illinois (AP) -- Film critic Roger Ebert, who is battling cancer in a Chicago hospital, says he looks forward to coming back to work despite a hard road to recovery.
"I don't have a crystal ball, so I can't tell you when, but I sure look forward to being back on the movie beat," he said in a statement Thursday."
