In Tuesday night's debate, Cheney said Edwards has "one of the worst attendance records in the United States Senate."

In truth, Edwards has an 84.8% voting record in the Senate. In each of his first four years, he had a perfect or near perfect record:

1999: Cast 271 out of 274 votes for a 99.2% voting record

2000: Cast 298 out of 298 votes for a 100% voting record

2001: Cast 377 out of 380 votes for a 99.2% voting record

2002: Cast 253 out of 253 votes for a 100% voting record

2003: Cast 281 out of 459 votes for a 61.2% voting record

2004: Cast 84 out of 198 votes for a 42.4% voting record

Overall, Edwards has cast 1664 out of 1962 votes for a 84.8% voting record.

Looks like Dick's nose is getting close to nice inches again!

Those last two years still concern me though. Why has he been voting so little these past two years? I understand campaigning would hurt that some but would it affect it that much?

I'd be more interested in seeing how he compares with other Congressmen.

If other Congressmen have that kind of record (Edwards last two years) I am going to be pretty unhappy.

there was a great clip on the daily show the other day. it showed dick saying that he's at the senate every tuesday and the first time he met edwards was the night of the debate (supposed to be a zinger), but then they showed a clip from a few years ago of the two sitting next to eachother at some function. well, jon made it a lot funnier than my retelling, but still. dick is full of it.

Son, yes, campaigning affects the voting record that much.

I really loved Cheney telling Edwards that his one-term Senate record is not very distinguished. Oh, that's right. Edwards is not nearly as distinguished or well-known as luminary solons like Senator Wayne Allard, Senator Lisa Murkowski, Senator Jon Cornyn, Senator Mike Crapo (be careful how you pronounce his distinguished name), or Senator Jon Kyl. Now, that's a bunch of well-known and distinguished Senators!

Senators are always vulnerable when they run against someone who is not in Congress because of the voting record and how it can be used against them. There is no equivalent way to measure Dick Cheney's "attendence".

And how many times have you heard George Bush (wanna talk about HIS attendence?) attempt to crucify John Kerry about having voted for this-or-that, without taking into consideration that many of those "votes" and minor elements hidden in bills about much more significant issues. It can all so easily be twisted.

feinstein9: Not only was the clip of the VP on the Daily Show, but he sat in front of the American people during the debate and said this any number of times during the debate. Once he said he'd never met him until that night and several times he talked about Edwards' never being there for votes.

The sad part is most Americans are too friggin lazy to bother looking up the facts and will just believe him...so I'm glad the part about his never meeting Edwards made it to the national press where most Americans will at least see it pushed into their faces and not have to take the time and trouble to LOOK and find out the truth before voting.

It is unfortunate, but most people will not watch debates or conventions and rarely read anything more than USA Today to get facts about the politicans for whom they will be voting. I hate to say this but we deserve what we get as leaders because we have lost the interest to really KNOW what the leaders stand for before voting and in a world dominated by Reality TV...who can be surprised?

People...get your butts off your lounge chairs and go do some research.

Some of us have more time for research than others, Sam.
