LEBANON - Carl and Abigail Jarboe, Christian activists and perennial candidates, told the Cornwall-Lebanon School Board Monday night that the high school musical was inappropriate for students.
"Jekyll & Hyde" is full of murders, prostitution and Christian-bashing, they said.
School officials, however, countered that if the Jarboes can't behave during the musicals, they will not be permitted to attend.
"It was reported that you were booing our students on stage and giving them thumbs-down," Superintendent Tom Sherk said.
"That is not appropriate."

Good for the school for telling these two asswipes to STFU.
"Christians are in the same position today as Jews were in the 1920s and 1930s."
The only response I have for that is "Oh Christ."

Posted: 4/20/07 at 12:57pmI'm so impressed with the administration's reaction. So many schools seem to be getting so reactionary when it comes to complaints about their theatre choices.

I love this quote:
"That's libel, slander," Abigail Jarboe said. "I want to know who told you that. I want their names. ... Whoever told you is lying."
Wow! Just a tad defensive no? But a guilty conscience will do that to ya'

Posted: 4/20/07 at 1:10pmShe's obviously familiar with the landmark Supreme Court case First United Methodist Church of Beeville, Texas vs. The Pepper Pot Community Theater Troupe, in which the right to boo at a performance that conflicts with Christian tenets (in this case, it was "South Pacific") is constitutionally protected speech.

No. It was my own fault. In order for satire to work, I guess it has to be slightly implausible. And I've been to Beeville.

I say Go Administration! In most cases the school will put its tail between its legs and punish the students even when nothing happened, just to avoid negative publicity.
What would make adults think that it is ever okay to boo at a high school show? It doesn't matter what religion you are, that's disrespectful and immature.

Rath perhaps you are thinking of this recent incident:
"Broadway Legend Elaine Stritch was accused of causing a scene at her Great-granddaughter’s 5th grade class play this week. Stritch attended PS 147’s presentation of “Christopher Columbus: As the World Turns” and allegedly booed, cat-called and made a obscene gesture during curtain calls.
“Well I can’t help that it was crap!” the Broadway star remarked when contacted for comment. “Columbus mumbled his lines and the Santa Maria was a rowboat! And when the new world came into sight, the big Italian suddenly sings “The World Goes Round? Christ, “Jekyll & Hyde” made more sense than that!”
Stritch admits that she may have ‘Muttered’ some complaints about the production to her seat mate actress Angela Lansbury, but adamantly denies that she mooned the actors during their bows. “"That's libel, slander," Strich said.”I want to know who told you that. I want their names. ... Whoever told you is lying." Richard and Esther Rosenbaum, whose son Isaac played Columbus, was seated behind the pair of octogenarian Broadway stars and reported that Strich did indeed “moon” the proceedings. “I was there” said Mrs. Rosenbaum. “Just as Ike came out for his bow, that horrible old woman turned her back, bent over and flipped up the tails of the white shirt she was wearing!”
School officials have warned Strich that she will not be welcome back for future performances. “I’d like to see them try!” she remarked when told that the school would stop her from attending the school’s production of “Fiddler on the Roof.” “I am bringing Angie back to cheer her up! I figure this “Fiddler” will be an even bigger piece of crap than that turd she’s in.”
Ms Lansbury is currently starring in the Broadway play Deuce.

Posted: 4/20/07 at 1:27pmAnd, just to be safe, the entire preceeding post is a product of my overly fertile imagination. Elaine Strich, to my knowledge, has never booed a class play and has nothing but the utmost repsect for 'Deuce' and the work of Anegla Lansbury & Terrence McNally. Updated On: 4/20/07 at 01:27 PM

"Jekyll & Hyde" is full of murders, prostitution and Christian-bashing, they said.
Unlike the Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde coloring books available at the Second Baptist Sunday school 2nd Grade classroom. Boy, I can certainly understand how they wouldn't have seen that coming.
Morons.

wait- so does this couple not even have (kids? grandkids? great-grandkids?) in this school? They just go around watching school plays and going to school fairs and whatnot just to complain to the school board about them? Man hopefully when I'm old and crotchety I'll have a better hobby.
Although- anyone else Google these fine upstanding folks? Apparently not only do they have problems with the plays, they've also been before the school board to shut down the gay/straight alliance, as the gays are the reason that God smite New Orleans with Hurricane Katrina.
(eta: or is it God 'smote'?)
