I just talked to my sister, and my nice and nephew have field day this week. It made me reminisce about Field Day when I was a kid, and how much I looked forward to it every year. The tug-of-war, kick ball, the fireman's relay, three-leg-race, obstacle course, egg-toss, and let's not forget the popsicles at the end of the day.
Remember field day?
I am a teacher and my school's field day is June 5th...as a kid it is great as a teacher you pray it won't be over 90 degrees
I had a ball!
Went to Catholic school, K-8. No field day there.

We don't have our field day until the second week in June. Sadly, Field Day is a shell of its former self, as a lot of the games we play now are purposely designed to be less competitive, so as not to offend certain students.
It's unfortunate.
Oh, the times we live in. I don't remember having winners and losers (except for the tug of war) We just had a tag we wore around our necks, and you got a sticker for every event you completed. If you did all of them you got something special like a certificate at the end of the year or something. Otherwise it was a thumbs up and a pat on the back from the gym teacher.
The only one I remember having was in 6th grade. It was our elementary school graduation year, so that's why. It wasn't anything great either.
The one thing about our field day that I really love is the inevitable water fight between students and staff that always erupts. One of the last games we play is a relay race involving moving buckets of water down a sort of assembly line. Ostentatiously, the goal is to fill up a huge bucket first. This always lasts about a minute or two, until someone throws the water in their bucket at the nearest opponent. At that point, all hell breaks loose.
We never got to do anything like that. It sounds like fun though. We did organized team sports, and that was it. I disliked that stuff because I'm not athletic.

Wow I haven't thought about field day in forever. I grew up in MD and my school called it the Olympics where the 1-5 grade classes got to participate. Much like everyone else we had the usual tug-of-war, 4-square tournament, kickball, swing contests, water balloon fights, blah blah blah. But the highlight of the day was definitely the massive widespread marathon game of tag...it was awesome. Everyone was soaked with sweat, water and juice and we all looked disgusting and half dead by the end of the day but it was fantastic.
I loved my field day. But I was always slow during the fireman's relay. Loved the tug of war though.
Speaking of field day, did anyone else have fundraisers when they were a kid, where all you had to do was have someone pledge 25 cents for each mile or lap that you walked. It was almost like a walk-a-thon. It was great because you would just walk with your family and friends. I wish more schools would do it here.
We never did that, but I participated in Jump Rope for Heart in 4th through 6th grade. And that is the extent of my athletic ability. LOL!
We did walkathons when I was a kid every fall in school. It was always to raise for money for the Leukemia Fund (I forget the actual name of the charity).
Went to Catholic school, K-8. No field day there.
So did I, and we had a great field day every year.
I did Jump Rope for Heart! That was such a big deal.
For some reason I always hated Field Day. My mom let me take a "mental health" day and stay home most years.
Where I live Field Day was K-5 and Jump Rope for Heart was 6-8.
I remember one year our class got disqualified from field day because some of the boys wore their baseball spikes and batting gloves for the tug of war.
The very few years I went to public school I got to experience field day. It was a blast! I wish we had an adult equivalent of field day now.
adamgreer, we had no field or much property. Our school was surrounded by houses in a little Polish neighborhood. Our recess time was held on a blacktopped area.

My dad and I were just talking about field day! He was telling me that when he helped out at my 1st grade field day it was like 95 degrees out. After the water balloon toss, he said all the kids thought they were being so scandalous and funny by throwing the balloons at him... but he was encouraging them because it was so damn hot! Pretty smart thinking, Pops!
We just completed our state mandated testing (called CATS here in Kentucky where I teach) and the kids got a cook-out and field day for doing their best on the test.
They had a lot of fun and it is nice to watch your students get to be silly and run around and be kids!
At our field day this year the PTA purchased a blow up water slide off of ebay for $200, so that should be fun. At the end of our day we always end up getting into a water balloon fight with the kids...I always let them win because it is usually over 90 degrees and it is nice to be cooled off...we also have a faculty vs kids tug of war and we don't let them win that one, although the past year we have lost all our male teachers so this year could be interesting
" My mom let me take a "mental health" day and stay home most years."
That explains a lot.
I would have kicked YOUR *ss in Field Day.
