Getting files from iPod to computer - please help!

As many of you know, I've been having MAJOR computer problems lately; I've just been required to reformat my machine again by the people in charge of the network at school.
When I reformatted last time, I was forced to erase my entire iPod upon re-installation of iTunes. That time, I had nothing to lose.
In the past week or so, I've accumulated some things that I recorded onto the iPod, but have yet to be transferred into iTunes, and I'll be heartbroken if I lose them.
If anyone could tell me what sort of program I might use, and how to go about getting these files to my computer once I re-install iTunes, or how to get my computer to read the iPod as a drive from which I can extract files, I'd be extremely grateful.
I should add that these files are voice notes; I recorded them, and what happens is that they record into one place on the iPod, then when you plug it in and sync it to iTunes, it puts them in the "correct" place while storing it in your on-computer library. So, also, will such a program pick them up from the iPod?
Thanks so much.

I've used the process on this site several times, quick, easy, and no programs involved

Thank you.
I've found a program as well, on a site call iTunes Lounge. I'll have to decide which thing to do.
If anyone has further ideas, though, I'll still take them.

I was thinking about using the one this site lists for a PC:

It says it can copy everything, including Extras and Voice Notes. Has anyone used it?

I can't say I've ever been in this situation, but doesn't the iPod pretty much amount to an external hard drive? Maybe you could copy everything you have in there into your computer's hard drive by using the crude My Computer method.
And holy crap, I just realized I need to find a way to transfer my music collection when I get a new computer. Only 11.73 GB; no big deal. *headdesk*

That's basically what it is; an external drive. The trick is getting the computer to read it as one, because the intended path is one way; computer to iPod. BluCat's link, though, provides a way to get your computer to make the path a two-way one.
My legit music is backed up on CD's, to getting that stuff isn't so much the issue; it's these recordings - soon to be added to that list is tomorrow's RENT stuff, which I'll be heartbroken to lose.

Right- I was just saying that by going to the iPod drive in My Computer and copying all its contents into your local hard drive, you would have (very crudely) gotten all your music collection in there. Glad to hear the link worked, though.
Nia- I have some methods in mind, but I'll definitely come back here if things go wrong.
