Posted: 1/8/06 at 12:10pmI hear ya, dearie. I went to see this last night. I love it! Although I admit, I was left cold with a few characters (I was a tad dissapointed with the Nobu character...I expected him to be a bit more bitchy, like in the book). Regardless, I would recommend this movie, as it's visually stunning.

Posted: 1/8/06 at 12:21pmI now know why Hatsumomo's illicit boyfriend was super hot and reminded me of Rick Yune. It's his brother.

Posted: 1/8/06 at 2:44pmI have to admit, I was disappointed with the movie. While it was visually stunning and deserves all the art-related awards it can get (set design, costumes, make-up, etc.), I agree with Hypertruffle that the characters left me cold. Especially Hatsumomo, who's been reduced to just being an angry drunk and not the clever satan spawn she was in the book. And some may there's no time to include all her moments in the movie - fair enough. But couldn't they have taken the time she did have, and replace some of the slurring and staggering for more manipulation and savviness?

Posted: 1/8/06 at 2:52pmI agree with Tiff-I was disappointed with the film in its lack of drama. Yes, it had drama, but for me it was on the surface. The film was beautiful to look at and that was the highlight for me, even if I was looking at Los Angeles!

The problem is I can't be on your squad if I'm playing for the other team. And these hos need me over here.

I was going to say that Geisha is one of the two movies on my newly shortened pre-school agenda, but I don't think the subject line is valid anymore. o_O

Threads here seem to get jacked more than Ron Jeremy does.
It's worth seeing once. It looks beautiful, and if you read the book, it's nice to see the images realized on the big screen. I just think it fails to capture to the heart of the novel, which to me, wasn't Sayuri's relationship with the Chairman (which was creepy and originally sort of pedophilic), but her loss of innocence in an environment she wasn't accustomed to and a dynamic that should've worked against her.

I think you nailed it, Tiff. I saw GEISHA a few weeks ago and, although I generally enjoyed it, I felt underwhelmed and couldn't for the life of me figure out why. The production values are lavish, the performances are lovely (if you can get over the hodgepodge of accents -- a problem here that wasn't evident in the similarly English-spoken THE LAST EMPEROR)....but something vital was missing.
The film is too focused on Sayuri's love for the Chairman, which really isn't all that appealing (in the book, the Chairman is more a walking ideal than a character). I wish they put more emphasis on how these geishas fit into Japanese culture. I got the impression from the book that they were superstars of a sort; in the movie they felt diminished, like escorts working for an agency.

You summed it up, Tiff and BlueWizard. As I was leaving the theatre last night my friend and I were saying that we just didn't LOVE it. But, we couldn't figure out exactly WHY.
It was visually stunning, but it didn't capture the heart of the story.
Last night we couldn't decide what we would have done differently, but the more I think about it I realize that the emphasis should have been on the loss of innocence (in the broadest of terms), which WAS the heart of the novel.

Parts of it were moving, but on the whole, it just didn't capture me the way the novel did.
Perhaps the experience is different for those who haven't read the book first.
