100 years of history up in flames - five alarm fire takes down the building from which Studebaker rose, mere blocks from Ford's Model T plant and the Fisher Theater building (the tall tower in the bottom picture). Another piece of Detroit and American history gone.
do they think it was set?

No word on origin yet. As huge as this was it's going to take time. We're talking a full city block here. The fire dept expects to be watching for and tending hot spots for about five days. Police were cruising the neighborhood watching for any spot fires caused by the pieces of roofing material and burning embers that were being carried blocks away by the fire's thermals.
Contrary to most of the national media reports the building wasn't empty. The east end had at least four stores in it including a popular meat market. The building owner was gathering proposals for converting the west end to lofts.
