And that's where it falls down. Responsibility is the key but guns are far too available to people who are not even in the same league as responsible.
I hate the word "guns". Maybe it's because I grew up in a household ran by a military man. I dunno.
I've always called them "pistols" or "rifles".
Anyway, I don't own a gun and probably never will. But if you're a responsible adult, who uses his pistol or rifle the way it's intended (target practice, hunting, if you're a police office) then you should have the right to do so.
But I think most people own a weapon just to harm someone else.

I think that there should be stricter gun control. That doesn't mean that I don't think that anyone should be able to have a gun. My grandfather owns one, but he would never use it for anything but protection (he doesn't live in a great neighborhood). I would never own a gun and I think that they should definitely be much more careful about who they give the guns to, but I do understand people's right to bear arms.
"...but I do understand people's right to bear arms."
Geek- please understand that what I am about to say is not aimed at you but at almost all Americans who believe the same thing that you said.
The people of the United States DO NOT have a right to bear arms under the 2nd Amendment. That Amendment states: "A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed." The key words in this amendment, which everyone somehow forgets, are A WELL REGULATED MILITA. In my understanding, this amendment was protecting the rights of those who were fighting for their country during the war. Unless John Doe is planning on serving the U.S.A with the gun he says he has the right to have, he really has no right to have that gun at all.
That said, I am not against people owning guns (when used for the right circumstances), just those who don't know the bill of rights yet scream '2ND AMENDMENT!'.
wow, I really killed this thread, didn't I?
i dont know much about guns, but is there a test or anything you have to pass to own one? i know you have to hasve a permit, but how hard is it to get one? do they check your background and everything?

WAY TO MANY PEOPLE THAT HAVE GUNS ARE IRRESPONSIBLE!
In the last couple months, in Broward County (where I live)- there have been 20+ shootings because of road rage!
People are using guns as middle fingers now-a-days.
Sad. Very, very sad.

I like Canada's control - no handguns and strict regulation of long guns
As of August 5th - Toronto homicides: 45, less than half by shooting
for comparison?
NYC homicides: 63 by February 13th of this year
Detroit homicides: 106 by April 14th
MickeyMouseville (Orlando) homicides: 33 by July 24th

Thank you. Everyone always writes off guns as being completely evil and will ALWAYS end up hurting someone. My dad has 6 or 7 rifles, shotguns, etc. that he uses for hunting. He's had them since before I was born. Not ONCE have my siblings or myself ever had a problem with mishandling them or anything. It *is* possible to own guns and be responsible about it. Yes, even with children in the house. It's the people that are the problems, not the guns.
