Abs are the only good physical attribute I have, but I can honestly it has NOTHING to do with dieting or excersice, because I am a lazy bum who eats like a pig. I just retained them from childhood I guess when I used to train every day for sports. I can say though that 50 ab crunches in the morning and at night will do good things...also if you tough your right shoulder to you left knee and the visa versa, that helps.

Abs are ALL about dieting and cardio - nothing else.
Well, actually take it back, for them to show up, nothing else. However, if you don't relaly have ab muscles to begin with (ones that will really show), then crunches and such will help.
Basically, you need to lose weight, and your bodyfat percentage needs to be low. Somewhere around 10% or lower would be a good goal if you really want a 6 pack.
I'll explain getting a 6 pack, but if you wanna become stronger and more toned all over, I can give you weight training tips.
But for the 6 pack:
1. Find out how many calories you need to take in daily to maintain your weight (you can search online for formulas and stuff to figure it out easily).
2. Take in LESS calories a day than you need to maintain, start at say 250 or so less, CONSISTENTLY!
3. Make sure you take in somewhere between 30-50 grams of fat a day (can go less also) but just giving you a good range. stay away from saturday fats etc. The rest should be carbs and protein. Could get more specific, but won't unless you want me too.
4. Cardio: Run as much as you can (however, do know that cardio and dieting and such, especially without weight training, does makes you lose muscle as well)
-make sure you run 20 minutes+ each time, because that is when your body starts to actually burn the fat.
5. Do crunches, leg raises, and other ab exercises... I'd suggest to try to use weight (like on your chest for crunches) if you are doing like a crazy amount (like 30-50+). You really will gain more muscle if you keep the reps down by adding weight, and remember *DO THEM CORRECTLY*
6. Stay consistent... it's all about your eating habits and your exercise (cardio). You can do the crunches, but it is not needed (unless you don't think you have ab muscles that will really be seen when the fat is gone).
Anyway, hope that helps...
Just remember, your eating habits are the most important thing, the lower your bodyfat percentage, the harder it'll get to lose that last bit of fat (and that is where cardo really comes in).
Any other info you want on weight training, dieting, etc, just ask, I'll post it here or I can PM you. (goes to anyone with questions)

I'm so out of it, I actually thought this thread was about anti-lock brakes.
My gym teacher said it perfectly: "Everyone has a six-pack. What matters is how many layers of fat it's under."

So if you are fat they show?
WHAT!?
Or if you are skinny they show?
I don't understand orangeskittles...
#13re: I WANT ABS!!!!!!!
Posted: 10/24/05 at 12:47amNo, it matters because if you don't have fat, or like few layers of fat, then the muscles are noticeable.

orange, that's what i said in my post... so yea, just lose the fat (diet and cardio) and you will have abs. NOT CRUNCHES.
However... in your case boytobroadway, you don't have abs because you don't have enough muscle mass.
You need to gain muscle (by eating more, and weight training), than after bulking up and getting more muscle mass, you then will have abs. You might gain some fat in the process (depends on how clean you eat), and then you would lose it and show abs again.
That's what bodybuilders do... they bulk, and cut, bulk and cut. It is a hard and long process, but guess some don't care.

I just realized today during costume fittings for our Murder Mystery play, I'm a cop, that if I had the body, abs included, I would so be a cop-dressed stripper.
Just thought I would throw that in.
I don't have a 6 pack, just a pillow for a stomach.

I'm going along with Jay on this one--you just have to burn more than you take in--when I was dancing every day, it was no challenge to keep them, but now...
I'd say it takes at least 6 weeks to notice a difference--sad, yes, but that's pretty close...
There's alot of little things you can do to cut those calories:
No sodas, coffee, or any drink with sugar in it
No eating after 9pm (or 7pm is even better)
Eating breakfast and early morning physical activity
Having several small meals instead of 3 big ones

Okay, a couple of small points-
1. If you're doing ab excercies, excercise your back as well. Working out just one half of an attached set of muscles is just begging for an injury.
2. Not all people are genetically inclined to get a six-pack, even if they do everything right. Just hope you get into good shape.

Posted: 10/24/05 at 5:00pmYour best bet, LeadMan, is to find a trainer...if you can't afford one, most gyms do offer a free session when you join...beyond that, maybe you could just start dating one, like I did...
#21re: I WANT ABS!!!!!!!
Posted: 10/24/05 at 5:06pmThe no food after 9pm rule- it's really about digesting all your food before you go to bed, right? So if you aren't going to bed until 3am, the no food after 9 doesn't make sense when compared with someone that's going to bed at 11pm. Shouldn't they just say how long before your bedtime, as opposed to assuming everyone has the same schedule and giving an arbitrary time?

ACtually I disagree with that rule, it's not really necessary. If you need to eat, you need to eat (example- working out at 9-10pm... you NEED food and stuff after, so eating at 10-11pm or so is fine).
It's basically just because you shouldn't eat before you go to bed, but it's not as big as a deal as people might have once thought.
I'd suggest just eatin 5-6 meals a day.
8 am - 11 am - 2 pm - 5 pm - 8 pm
Something similar. Just split the 3 big meals to the smaller meals, remember to take in the correct amount of calories (depending on whether you want to gain, maintain or lose weight) and fat, protein and carb amounts.
fat - 30-50g (less is fine too, there are good fats you can take in also)
protein - 1 gram per 1 pound (of muscle mass, so if you are overweight, need find how much muscle mass you have). That is mroe for if you weight train and do lots of physical activity.
carbs - the rest of your diet. Includes fruits, pasta, bread, etc. Try to keep the simple sugars and candy or what not to a minimum and eating whole wheat stuff is better for you also.
Just some more tips....
and getting a trainer is expensive, I would suggest people learn themselves. Plenty of online messageboards and articles to read on all of this, and you can get lots of information-all you will need. I personally think I did better myself than I could have done froma trainer. I not only try to maintain a healthy lifestyle, I know what one is and why.

That's true to a degree Jay and orange, but your body has an internal clock (duh) so if you're accustomed to a later schedule, ie you work late, etc...and you get up late, it should be the same...
Not only is it a question of digestion, but people are much less active at night as well--you might want to try taking papaya enzyme tablets to aid digestion.
As for the training, there are as many schools of thought for training as there are for acting--Jay is correct in that you can do alot of study on your own, but to suggest he did and would continue to do better on his own is reaching a bit. There are MANY trainers who could teach him things he could never glean from online posts. But there are alot of charlatans as well.
Jay--do you avoid high fructose corn syrup and partially hydrogenated fats as well?

I have the "Billy Blanks Boot Camp"
I've tried a couple of times.
But I am going to start it and FINISH it.
It works for me.
What I don't understand is the foods that we should avoid.
Carbs yes or carbs no?
