I hate that strong, empowered but misguided woman Maureen Dowd

I think I miss the good old days when you couldn't read her column online unless you forked over $20. Now I see the title "May We Mock, Barack?" and think,'Hmmmm wonder what THAT'S about?" and end up revolted and appalled.

She had lots of repulsive columns on Clinton, too- and now she's decided she doesn't like Obama much either. Today's kerfluffle in a teacup? The Media! They don't make fun of Obama! It's reverse racism! It would have been stupid reporting in a week when the New Yorker didn't crucify him on the cover, but this week, it's particularly goofy- Hey Maureen, YOU ARE THE MEDIA! You're mad no one picks on Barack? What am I supposed to do about it- you're the one with the nationally read column!

She does repeat one funny joke. I'll post it so you don't have to wade through the 10 column inches of pooh:

“A traveling salesman knocks on the door of a farmhouse, and much to his surprise, Barack Obama answers the door. The salesman says, ‘I was expecting the farmer’s daughter.’ Barack Obama replies, ‘She’s not here. The farm was foreclosed on because of subprime loans that are making a mockery of the American dream.’ ”

Actually Maureen is on to something. People tiptoe around Obama because he's black and they don't want to "offend".

When he first came on to the scene, someone made fun of his big ears. They were scolded for that.

Saturday Night Live has mocked his stuttering way of saying "uhhm" in speeches. They were scolded for that.

His wife's off limits. His children are off limits.

There is no humor in the man and nobody is able to create a bit of fun surrounding him.

She's a columnist. She writes. She has to have a point of view. A lead. A way in. You know, something to write about. Yet everyone is so stunned when she's perceived to be "against" someone. She was hired to write with a certain heightened, take. Bottom line: She has two columns a week to fill. She takes on just about everyone (so does Gail Collins, by the way, but she's a very different flavor).

Obama made fun of his ears, so they should be fair game for others. At Mt Rushmore, when asked by a reporter if his likeness would ever be up there, he responded that there wasn't enough stone up there for his ears.

It's just part of how the media decides what the story is, then writes it. Obama is humorless. He's an elitist. He's a policy wonk- none of that being true stands in the way of the story. Or, in this case, non-story.

She gets two columns a week to fill- and this is what she writes about? We all know the media is totally and utterly dominated by the right wing> Maureen Dowd is one of the few moderate to liberal voices who gets a national platform and she spends her time complaining people don't crack jokes about Obama?

Maureen is not liberal or conservative. She's a contrarian.

When Clinton was in office, she was against him--and Hillary.

While Bush has been in office, she was against him.

When Obama is in the lead, she's against him.

Don't EVER expect Maureen to be on YOUR side, unless your side is losing.

It's similar (and dryer) to what Jon Stewart has said on The Daily Show. Is he a skanky empowered woman, too?
