Are we talking rock or are we talking pop? I wouldn't consider Karen Carpenter or Mama Cass as rock. If we're going in that direction, then I vote John Denver. Johnny Cash wasn't a rock star either. If you're going to include country music, then Patsy Cline should come before Johnny.
If we're talking true rockers, I vote Janis Joplin.
