Elton John vows to make hip hop record

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - After 40 years of performing rock music, pop ballads and movie soundtracks, Elton John is looking to cross over to yet another musical genre -- hip hop.

"I want to bring my songs and melodies to hip hop beats -- a bit like 'No Diggity' by Blackstreet,'" John said in excerpts of an interview posted on Rolling Stone's Web site on Friday.

John told the music magazine he would like to work with producer Dr. Dre and a variety of artists, although he had yet to contact them.

"I want to work with Pharrell (Williams), Timbaland, Snoop (Dogg), Kanye (West), Eminem and just see what happens. It may be a disaster, it could be fantastic, but you don't know until you try," he said.

John is one of rock-n-roll's most prolific singer/songwriters and is known for flamboyant costumes and spectacular piano playing. His hits include "Your Song," "Rocket Man" and "Candle in the Wind."

The 59-year-old musician's next album, "The Captain and the Kid" is expected to be released in the fall.

He soared to stardom in the 1970s and has maintained a legendary status, branching into writing songs for movies like "The Lion King" and Broadway plays like "Aida."

But, hip hop?

Actually, John performed the song "Stan" with Eminem on 2001's telecast of the Grammys, the music industry's top awards, and the pair brought the house down.

I LOVE how you managed to bring Lestat into the posting! (lol)

Seriously though, why would he WANT to do hip hop? He doesn't need the money...so it must be the "challenge" for him.

I really think he has lost touch with reality. It might be a late reaction to all those drugs he did when he was younger but something is amiss here. Still, it might be interesting to see him in hip-hop drag.

I lost all respect for him when he performed with Eminem.

Elton can retire when Mick Jagger stops touring. At least Elton is staying vital and trying new things out. That is living life to the fullest. At least he won't have regrets when he does decide to pack it in. The man has more money than god and total artistic freedom. Give him a break. What would be even sadder is if he just kept singing the sames things over and over like so many others. I wouldnt want to see Elton in his 70s playing county fairs. Good for him for taking chances.

His part of "Stan" wasn't the rap. Eminem did the rap, and John sang the part that Dido recorded.

I've enevr seen Lestat so I'll take your word on it.

I think, in the musical genre, Elton did a great job on Billy Elliot, and in nthe Pop/Rock etc. genre he has done an awful lot of brilliant music. I haven't got a clue why he'd want to do Hip Hop, but that doesn't mean I think he should retire. No, he'll probably make a mess of the hip-hop business, but still, his other stuff is good.

15 years of wisdom tells you that?

I didn't mean he'll make a mess of the whole business, as in everyone who's ever done hip hop, I didn't mean that. I meant his attempt at Hip Hop will be a mess. D'accord?

I agree with BettyBoy. I love Elton and it'll be interesting to see how this goes. It will be amazing, or it will be a mistake. Either way we will learn something. Personally I can't wait to check it out. Who knows? The man is full of surprises.

Babs is still talented. I'd rather listen to her than Elton's recent junk. Maybe she could do a hip-hop duet with Elton on his CD?

I'm listening to NYC's Classic Lite-FM HD stream and they just played Babs singing "Second Hand Rose" followed by Elton's "Crockodile Rock". Must be Kismet. They have to do a rap duet on his new album!
