Supposedly thety reason Jim Broadbent had to bow out of the HAIRSPRAY movie is that he's going to do the SWEENEY TODD movie - playing Judge Turpin I assume.
Opinions?
I could see him as Turpin.
It would have been a good choice on his part.
Hope this is true - he would make a great Turpin.
Doesnt the Hairspray movie start filming soon, and Sweeney in early 2007? I'm not sure about that, but I think so.

That's what I was to say Midwest. It does not seem like the shooting schedules are going to overlap too greatly. I don't see a reason why he couldn't have done both films.
"The movie is set to begin shooting in early February at Pinewood Studios near London, with rehearsals and pre-recordings beginning in NOVEMBER and DECEMBER. A late 2007 release date is planned."
Timetable Set for Burton's Sweeney Todd Film Starring Johnny Depp
Thanks, pab.
While I think he'd be a good Turpin... I could see him as Pirelli or the Beadle as well.
Hell, I'd just be glad he was in it!
I think the major question is whether or not he can sing. He was dubbed over for Moulin Rouge, and the music in Sweeney is much more difficult.
Wait -- so that wasn't him doing "Like A Virgin"?
eta: Not that Judge Turpin really sings that much, because I'm betting the judge's Johanna doesn't make the cut regardless.

Who sang for him in Moulin Rouge?
Cause I really hated their voice in Spectacular Spectacular.
Why is this on the off-topic board?
I can see him as judge.
I can't remember the name. I'll have to pop in my well-worn copy of the DVD when I get home.
"In the "Like a Virgin" number, Jim Broadbent's voice is dubbed by an opera singer, mimicking Broadbent's own vocal performance. "
Saw the exact same thing, but everyone knows that imdb.com isn't the most reliable source. I seem to remember them saying something about the fact that he was dubbed over on one of the DVD special features. Either that or I've been believing a lie for the past 5 years!

It was announced in July in Variety that Jim Broadbent is filming "And When Did You Last See Your Father?" with Colin Firth this fall. I think it was announced before Hairspray and perhaps may have conflicted with it.
I'd rather see Broadbent as The Beadle or Pirelli than Judge Turpin. I still think Christopher Lee would make a GREAT Turpin.
