That was sad and she must have been an amazing, charitable woman.
When you get three columns of obits in Times, all from organizations that she helped out.
I am sorry for your loss. She sounds like a very special person.
However, it says that the cab driver was not ticketed. I am not saying it was her fault, but I so often see pedestrians walking against lights, jay walking or just plain not watching where they are going. So to assume that this driver is at fault and "something should be done" you might just want to think about that next time YOU are in a hurry and can't wait for the light to change to cross the street or take a shortcut because it is just too far to then next crosswalk.
I have no doubt there are some crappy and dangerous drivers, but when you say the cops do nothing, how often do you see them giving pedestrians ticket for walking against the light or in the middle of the street? If it says "Don't Walk" and you do and get hit by a cab it is not really the driver's fault. And the fact that this driver stayed there and was not cited says a lot.
Undi, I'm very sorry to hear that. What an unfortunate loss.
As someone who walks to work everyday, I have to deal with horrible drivers who literally do not pay attention to what they're doing. How many times am I crossing the street and see cars run red lights. I also say enough talking on the cell phone while driving!! Just last night I saw a driver run a stop sign (and almost plow into another car) because they were busy chatting on the phone. I also saw someone on a bicycle run down a pedestrian because they were not paying attention (because, again, they were on their cell phone). How anyone can ride a bicycle and talk on the phone at the same time is beyond me.
Undi, I am sorry about your loss.
The cab situation is in part symptomatic of the problems Dottie mentioned. People do not take driving seriously - they do too many things when behind a wheel, and have very little concern for how their actions and driving patterns may affect, or in this case, kill other pedestrians or drivers.
And again it is all the driver's fault. How many of you walk down the street talking on your phones, eating, rummaging through your purse, reading, checking out a hottie with no regard of what is happening around you? EVERYONE should take some responsibility for their own safety. When accidents happen it is always so easy to blame the driver. If the cab had swerved to avoid hitting this woman and he had died in a crash and she had lived you all would have probably STILL blamed him when he might have been trying to protect the pedestrian from their own negligence.
