Doesn't she look like a Stepford Wife?
Those eyes - drawn so tight they belong to Joan Rivers!

YES!
God, I really dislike Laura Bush. A lot. She's the ideal Republican first lady--prim and proper and meant to stay in the background and smile blandly and nod at whatever her husband says, never voicing an opinion of her own. I hate the image that she puts forth, it just seems so backwards to me... you're the first lady, be a positive role model for godsakes.

That woman just gives me the creeps.
To me, it seems like she has lost all discretionary thought and just is there as a lawn ornament.
Teresa Heinz would have be so much more interesting.
Please, I cannot wait until 2008.

Bumping this, because I think that it deserves discussion.
Is anyone else sort of outraged to have a first lady who perpetuates the idea that women are only valuable insofar as they are good wives and back up their husbands? Occasionally she'll make comments on some issue (only education, it seems probably because it's "touchy-feely" and can be considered a woman's domain), but otherwise she's just echoing whatever her husband's stance is or not saying anything at all. I agree that Ms. Heinz Kerry would have been a much more interesting first lady.
I think that it just speaks volumes about the Republican party that Laura is their ideal first lady (and she is, they LOVE her), and it's definitely not saying anything good.

Sue me, I miss Hillary.

Oh, honey, who DOESN'T miss Hillary?
Don't worry...she'll be back in the White House soon enough

Posted: 12/8/05 at 12:40pmWe drove by the Clintons' house on Thankgiving and it really made me reflect on our current first family. I don't know 100% that Hillary will be the best candidate, but I am ready for a democrat in there. I want Jed Bartlett to run.

I miss Hillary, too, but I want them to nominate someone who can win. If she can, fantastic... but with the current political climate of the U.S., I don't think that she would.
Edit: LOL at the Leno joke... sad but true!

JerseyGirl2 - I agree. Jed Bartlett would make a great president...and Abby Bartlett as first lady. Every time I watch the West Wing I wish they were real!
I'm indifferent to Laura Bush. She has done nothing to impress me, and has been quiet enough that she hasn't completely irked me. She's just...there. Doesnt' say much for the strong role model a first lady should be.
In terms of Hilary in the White House, while that would be great, I don't see it happening. What the party needs right now is a moderate/liberal candidate that can pick up some votes in the red states. Hilary, while she'd be fab, has no chance right now. She would never be able to conjure up enough conservative votes, simply because she is female. Sad but true.

Posted: 12/8/05 at 1:02pmI am terribly afraid that a Hillary run would ensure 4 more years of a republican in the White House. However, should she run, Bill will be a HUGE plus on her side. One thing that Bill had working against him was Hillary. I have seen bumper stickers that read, "Impeach Clinton and her husband, too." People didn't like Bill becuase you got Hillary, too. But people like Hillary more now, so the 2for1 ticket could be successful. Regardless, 2008 is going to be a hell of a year.

Posted: 12/8/05 at 1:18pmLaura Bush has been a frequent topic for discussion in my classes. (I'm working on my MLS for those who don't know) I am appalled by her willingness to support by default so many programs that are chipping away at Intellectual Freedom. Not to mention that as a former teacher she has to know how horrible No Child Left Behind is.

Posted: 12/8/05 at 1:21pmI will admit I'm fascinated by Laura Bush. I think she's a smart woman...a compassionate woman...a woman who, while not 'liberal', is probably much more of a humanist than people give her credit for. Something about her makes me think that she actually has a relatively broad world view. And while her husband is dry, word is she enjoys a nice bourbon now and then. But here's the thing. She's had to supress all of that to support the man who is her husband. And THAT I find tragic. She probably never thought her husband was going to be President. He wanted to run baseball, not the country. And now, because of Karl Rove and his klan who set their sights on Bush as the perfect puppet to push their dark agenda, she (and her husband) are in this situation that forces her to keep her mouth shut. As for Bush, I know this will be controversial, but I don't think he's a bad man. I don't even think he hates gay people. I think he's someone with an optomistic outlook who was the perfect cover to sell said dark agenda. I'm not absolving him of all blame...not in the least. But I actually reserve my hate not for Bush but for those who control him.

Don't hope for a Hillary run. That is a sure way to keep the Republicans in the White House. She will never, ever win - middle America hates her like it's their job.

And of course you all know the supressed story of how she may have murdered her ex-boyfriend in a car "accident" when she was 17:
---
The police records are now sealed. According to some re-posted newspaper reports from 1963, the person she killed was actually her boyfriend. She hit him in another car, his car was stopped in the middle of the intersection, she was driving 55 MPH on dry pavement on a clear sunny day, and she also had to run the stop sign to hit him. Now tell me, doesn't it seem pretty strange that if this guy was her boyfriend, he was in a seperate car sitting at a 90 degree angle to her and she managed not to see either him sitting in the intersection, OR the stop sign in broad daylight? Aren't people who kill another human being when they're so clearly at fault -assuming there was nothing intentional- NORMALLY charged with manslaughter when this happens (Unintentional killing of another person through negligence)?
Something about this story smells real funny to me. It seems to me that a LIKELY scenario for a boy friend and girl friend being in seperate cars would be that maybe they had a fight. She was 17, hardly a child in the eyes of the law. Many a 16 year old or even 13 year old, have been sentanced as an adult for crimes. I guess we'll never know. ...
I think the questions about Laura Bush are entirely warrented. They're warrented because the police records have been sealed, and the minute someone undertakes to hide public records of a crime from public view, and then involves themselves in public office, they shouldn't have the right to privacy that someone in the private employment sector enjoys. If she wanted employment in any other government agency, those records would be looked at. She's the First Lady, I think the public has the right to ask and to know. If she has nothing to hide, unseal the records, all of them. I don't think anyone ought to allow themselves to be shamed into "don't ask don't tell" when someone is dead, and if politics are being played, they're really being played on the other side; imagine if Hillary Clinton had this in her background. 'Nuff said.

Posted: 12/8/05 at 1:38pmIsn't it automatically sealed if the defendant in question is a minor? Since she wasn't tried, she was never considered an adult. maybe I watch too much Judging Amy.

Posted: 12/8/05 at 1:46pmIt's certainly not an unknown incident, however, if it had been Hillary in the same situation, it would have been dragged out and investigated within an inch of its life by the Republicans.

Posted: 12/8/05 at 1:54pmFunny how the republicans dig and dig and drag out every little horrid factoid from a candidates past and the democrats are not quite as negative, it seems. I realize why it is. We don't want to stoop to that level, but man it would feel nice. With all the crap in Laura and Dubbya's past, it would have been a free for all. I never understood why a bigger deal wasn't made out of Stinky McDrunkard's past.

Oh, YWIW--you ain't seen the half of it!
For those really interested in this story, here's the Snopes Urban Legend page (they declare it True) and then I'll see if I can dig up the conspiracy-buff page--the one you need your tinhat to read--and the one that will bring PapaLovesMambo roaring from his daytime coffin, calling me all sorts of names for daring to accuse Laura Bush of being a MURDERESS.
