Every year when the unofficial end of summer falls upon us, the official (decided to be "official" by a collective of international fools made up of myself and my film geek friends) Oscar handicapping season begins.
Let's discuss, argue, and waste time sharing our personal opinions as the field slowly narrows to the final 150 nominees.
Ok, it's actaully 10.
Here is a pre-Toronto Film Festival scorecard:

I'm putting my early money on Invictus (as do the Gurus).
A movie about Neslon Mandela and soccer starring Morgan Freeman (lauded actor playing a real person - check!), Matt Damon (respected actor doing an accent - check!), and directed by the emperor with no clothes Clint Eastwood (Clint Eastwood is involved - check!).
Unless it really REALLY sucks is it possible that the academy won't drink this punch?

You can honestly can't imagine 10 good films in any given year? I can.
Cool list. Of the films that have been released or screened, Awards Daily has these in the Best Pic running:
Best Picture
Inglourious Basterds
An Education
The Hurt Locker
District 9
Up
But a lot of films with potential will be coming out this fall/winter. I bet it's a strong year.

I don't see Basterds getting a best pic nod, all the hype has been around Christopher Waltz.
I still think that Watchmen was deserving of recognition also.

Yes, I believe it was February 23 at precisely 4:03 pm that I predicted that Madonna will win an Oscar for her upcoming movie musical.
And, she'll thank you in her speech, Namo. Because you are her favorite.

I would love to see District 9 get nominated for an Oscar. It's one of the few movies, actually, the only movie this year where I just kept thinking about it weeks after it came out. Actually, today is the third time that I watched the movie!
Plus I think Sharlto Copley gives an amazing first time leading actor performance.

I'd love it if District 9 gets a nom.
Then we might have District 9 and Nine and maybe 9. :)

Coraline and Up would still be nominated in the Best Animated Film categories. Since there's a whopping ten slots, I hope 500 Days of Summer can sneak in there. It's still one of the best I've seen all year.
