What is the difference between Margarine and Butter?

I tried both today, and I could not tell.

Which do you prefer and why?

butter

margarine has a lot of disgusting additives (he says as he sips a Diet Coke)

If anyone ever tells you that you put too much Parmesan cheese on your pasta, stop talking to them. You don't need that kind of negativity in your life.

I don't know the difference, as far as taste.

I prefer margarine. It's softer.

I know.

I only use it when I eat a bagel at home. Which is...about 4 times a year. I never use butter either.

Go for the real thing - butter - just watch your intake. Margarine is really not so healthy for you.

munk, you can now get soft butter

I only use Brummel & Brown, 35% vegetable spread, 10% yogurt (and only God knows what the other 55% is), but I love the stuff

If I must, butter. It's all natural, no hydrogenated oils. But I still avoid it.

I do have soft marg at home for emergencies.

Neither. I use olive oil, canola oil or Pam for grilling and applesauce for baking.

Butter! Hotel Bar. I really watch my intake of it, but when I have a baked potato, or a piece of bread in a restaurant, I want the real thing.

Butter -- I agree that you may as well just go for the real thing.

However, you know what tastes amazing? Margarine on baked potatoes.

Neither. I've never been a fan of either.

And the other thing about the Phantom Lady was, Bert, she realized, in the city that never sleeps... What did she realize, Kitten? That all the songs she'd listened to, all the love songs, that they were only songs. What's wrong with that? Nothing, if you don't believe in them. But she did, you see. She believed in enchanted evenings, and she believed that a small cloud passed overhead and cried down on a flower bed, and she even believed there was breakfast to be had... Where? On Pluto. The mysterious, icy wastes of Pluto.

I use margarine because it's what we have, but we only get "light" margarine, which takes about 3.2 million light years to melt. My grilled cheese just doesn't taste the same!

Butter has a lot of saturated fat, which isn't so good for you, but most margarines contain hydrogenated oils (trans-fatty acids), which are much worse. They promote inflammation and heart disease. If I'm going to have one or the other, it's butter.

siamese, I've tried it but cannot stand margarine on baked potatoes. I don't load it up with butter, but I enjoy the taste of the real thing. IMO, the worst is that Country Crotch stuff. Bleah.

With bread and stuff, I always use extra virgin olive oil.

Folks, if you're going to use olive oil, make sure it's extra virgin.

Hah! Country Crock is my absolute favorite on baked potatoes, but I don't like it (or margarine, for that matter) on anything else. I rarely go to Wendy's, but when I do, I always ask for three packets of CC for my potato. It really is horrible for you, though. In simplistic terms, I'd rather have natural fat than trans fat with twenty chemicals along with it.

I do that a lot too in Italian restaurants. Instead of butter on a piece of Italian bread, I'll use a little of the flavored olive oil. It's delicious.
