Posted: 3/28/08 at 1:09pmI'm becoming really tired with my book. I feel as though everything I'm singing is overdone! Does anyone have any suggestions of songs that aren't heard a lot at auditions? Thank you!

not always... depends on the score you get.
I'm deamed mezzo sop... however, I personally don't think that's the case. All of those songs are in, for the most part, my lower range... therefore their not sop.

I don't mean to be rude at all...but I thought we were going for pieces that aren't overdone.
These ones are slightly less so than the ones previously mentioned:
"Meadowlark" from The Baker's Wife
"Teach Me Not to Love" from Triumph of Love
"I've Seen the World" from Berlin is Mine
"Every Day is Night" from Birds of Paradise
"Chimes" from The Capeman
"Mirage" from Goblin Market
"What is a Man?" from Pal Joey
"It's a Helluva Way to Run a Love Affair" from Plain and Fancy
"Gainesville" from Randy Newman's Faust
"Letters" from Baker Street
"If This is What We're Fighting For" from The Beautiful Game
"What's Your Rush?" from Bounce
"When Do I Get Mine" from Busker Alley
"I've Made Up My Mind" from Bingo
Hope that helps a bit. Good luck revitalizing your book! None of those are actually currently in my book, but I'm going to choose a few to work on.

Music Man, My Fair Lady, Sound of Music and Green Finch - I am going by the original score here. And the original actors cast to play these roles when the shows first opened on Broadway - were sopranos (Barbara Cook, Julie Andrews, Mary Martin, etc.), as this is the voice type that the composers had in mind when they wrote the show. I am not saying a high mezzo is incapable of singing these parts, it's just that originally - that is how they were written and meant to be cast.
Jessikax09 - you say you are not a mezzo although people tell you so because the songs above sit in your lower range, therefore they must be mezzo songs. It sounds to me like you are a sop rather than a mezzo.

Yeah those are probably some of the most overdone songs in musical theatre history. Just add on On My Own and Defying Gravity.
Take a look at Triumph of Love, How to Save the World and Find True Love in 90 Minutes or Less, The Unauthorized Autobiography of Samantha Brown, Evil Dead the musical, Children of Eden, Infinite Joy or Elegies, It's Only Life, Flora the Red Menace, John and Jen, Once on This Island and Spitfire Grill. They all have great mezzo songs!

Posted: 4/21/08 at 6:04pmI was thinking about singing Memory from Cats at an audition, since it is now quite an old song, and I get the impression that it is less overdone than it was since people have moved onto Wicked, Avenue Q and all the more recent stuff. Does anyone else think that? And would anyone strongly advise against singing Memory?

I advise against it. It may not be as overdone since the advent of 'Wicked', but the people you'll be auditioning for will almost certainly remember when it was overdone. You want to wow them with your amazingness, not give them traumatic flashbacks.

"I Cain't Say No"-Oklahoma! - FUNNY! I think I'm just bent on this one because my school just did a production of it and I had to practice it in voice lessons for a while
"Nothing"- A Chorus Line- just a really fun song that's good for mezzo
"Happy to Keep His Dinner Warm"-How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying: funny song that's true mezzo with a liiiittle bit of soprano in it
"Losing My Mind"-?? It's REALLY sad, but a good belter song if you're kind of close to alto for some of the lower notes
"The Ladies Who Lunch"- ?? I don't rememberXD But that one's only good if your mezzo leans more towards alto. I started off my semester trying to learn it, but as the semester progressed, it got out of my range
"Shy"- Once Upon a Mattress kind of boring because there's MAYBE five different notes, but a good song
I'm hoping these help!

if you do any song really well you should go it. Meadowlark is a great song with a story and an arch to play. It shows incredible range and is a fantastic acting song. If you can't act it then don't do it. But you would eliminate half of musical theater if you couldn't sing things Patti LuPone has sung. You shouldn't sing something if its incredibly over done (ie Wicked, Wild Party) because every girl in Manhattan sings it. If can blow it out of the water then absolutely do it. If you can't... don't.
Anyway, you would never get through all of Meadowlark at an audition. Maybe you would for community theater but you would never make through for a regional contract or league call.
