I have narrowed it down to these two hotels based on my budget of $200 or less. Which one would you pick and why? I know the room is going to be small at either but my main concern is that it is clean, safe and bug/rodent free! I would also like to stay in the Times Square area for convenience sake.

All comments are welcomed and appreciated.

I stayed at the Milford for a week the last time I was in New York and would recommend it (keeping in mind that I've never stayed at the Quality Inn, mind you). The room was really small and the view is less than stellar, but for the budget-minded, it was great.

Our only problem was when we first got to our room, they hadn't cleaned it from the guests before us. We called housekeeping, went out for a quick spin around Times Square, and the room was spotless by the time we got back (and the cleaning staff was extremely apologetic. After there we didn't have any problems at all.

TripAdvisor might be something you want to check out (www.tripadvisor.com). It has traveler reviews for pretty hotel imaginable. I used it the last time I went on a trip and it was great. Have fun in NYC! :)

I have read the reviews on Trip Advisor and found that the opinions of both hotels were pretty much equally split.

I was hoping that theatregoers like myself that visit this message board would have some experience with either hotel.

Thanks everyone so far for your responses.

I cannot under any circumstances imagine staying at the Milford Plaza ever again-- tiny, dirty, loud-- a friend remarked "Well at least the roaches will be grossed out and stay away." Horrible.

The Quality Inn was lovely. We got a one bedroom suite for about the same price as a regular room elsewhere, with a queen size bed in one room and a sofa chair and table in the other- TVs in both rooms. The bathroom was larger than my room at the Milford.

Milford does seem to corner the market on hustlers-- the lobby was swarming with them. It was pretty funny to head up to bed after a show and see working boys trying to catch your eye in the lobby, then leave the next morning to see the same guys still hustling at 9 AM.

Have you looked into the Doubletree Times Square? They often have great deals and if you look on the Hilton web site and "join up" they have even better deals- or, you could check the "other" part of this web site- that's how we got a great rate during holiday week. They are in a great location, are all suites and the rooms and gorgoeus AND quiet (the lobby is on the third floor)!

Everytime I go to New york, I stay at the Milford. It's location couldn't be better!! Our overall experience was really great! The rooms are kinda cramped, but I mean come on! When your in New York City, are ya really gonna spend that much time in your room?? I'd highly suggest it!!

I've stayed at the Milford several times from 1988 to 2002 and never had a problem. Since the rates skyrocketed, I haven't stayed there in a while.

I haven't stayed in either, but my friend's mom, who lives in CT and stays overnight in the city whenever she comes in to see shows, *always* stays at the Milford, and loves it there- it's very basic, but fits her just fine.

Ok, I am scrolling through the reviews on TripAdvisor.com, and I am loving the one that complains because there was a sign that said "Urinetown" outside their window! That's almost as much fun as the ones complaining because OMG Times Square is noisy at night!

I love the Quality Inn.

It's been my favorite hotel we've stayed at in New York.
It's roomy.
And the staff is fantastic.
And it's right across the street from the Palace.

Milford is nice
Its a bit more pricey than Quality.
But, still it could fit the bill for you.
Plus, its within walking distances of several theaters.

I've stayed at the Milford and it was ok. The room was very cramped though and had no view what so ever. When we called housekeeping for stuff it took them forever to respond. Thought the room could have been cleaned better, but then I'm obsessively clean when it comes to my surroundings. But seriously, barely spent time in the hotel when I went to NY. Only time I was there was when i was sleeping, the rest was spent wandering the city. Location wise I think it's great. With in walking distance to Time Square and many theaters. And if I remember correctly, there is a subway station at the corner of the block the hotel is on.

The Milford is fine, but expect lines as they don't have a system computer check in, which means going to the desk to check out too. Why not try priceline. Last week I got the Crown Royal (I think its a Double tree for 155 tx included) which is a 3 star hotel. The Milford is a two star hotel. I find that hotels on Expedia.com are cheaper than the actual sites. Also try the Edison Hotel, similar style as the Milford, but cleaner and computers.

I've stayed at the Milford several times, and I really love it. It is SO convenient to all the theatres. It is also clean, and it has decent surroundings. The staff is friendly, and the last time I visited their TV had the Broadway channel which is always a plus in my book. re: Milford Plaza Hotel or The Quality Inn Times Square Hotel??? Just kidding- the service is wonderful. It is clean and safe.

So, that was the Drowsy Chaperone. Oh, I love it so much. I know it's not a perfect show...but it does what a musical is supposed to do. It takes you to another world, and it gives you a little tune to carry with you in your head for when you're feeling blue. Ya know?

Neither!!

My boyfriend and I recently were in NYC and looked for hours at hotels and ended up staying at a Boutique hotel called The Fitzpatrick... http://www.fitzpatrickhotels.com/

The price was a little over $200 but we had great service and the room was extremely clean and a very comfortable bed. The bathroom was also huge and clean!

The one in Manhattan is a little more money but Grand Central was not that far and walking distance from everything. I'd recommend there...

But that's just my two cents!

Cheers on a good trip.

The last time I stayed at a hotel in NYC was the Comfort Inn on 71st Central Park West. Granted it is not in Times Square but I walked to the theatre every evening and it is right across the street from Central Park. Not a place to "hang out" in but I was really only there to sleep. It was reasonable. They were revovating when I was there. Read some recent reviews and like other places they were good and bad. But I know you can get a room there for under or just at 200 bucks after taxes, etc.

I realize this thread is 3 years old, but The Milford Plaza is not currently an option. (Shame all that wasted space in an excellent location).
