#0Oh, help! Where should my parents eat?
Posted: 11/12/04 at 9:40pmMy 74 year old father and 68 year old mother are coming to New York during Thanksgiving to visit me. To sort of give you a picture of how much of a disaster this is, my pop hates New York so much that I ended up not telling him that I was leaving Atlanta until the day before I left. The problem is, he doesn't like change. So anything new is out. I swear, the man is impossible. I'm trying to figure out what restaurants I can take him to that he won't turn his nose up at. Fortunately, he does like italian food so I was going to take them to an italian place, but other than that, I'm clueless. All of my favorite spots are out. Any ideas? He doesn't like ethnic food (other than italian, and he hates pizza!) Oh yeah, my dad doesn't know he's coming yet...

Posted: 11/12/04 at 9:47pmno problem. I LOVE that place. God food. Good service. Classic feel that a lot of places don't have... live entertainment that is classic all-american... and the model train is fun to see.

Great Italian -- Becco on restaurant row -- great food and great and large $20 bottle wine list -- run by Lidia Bastianich (from the PBS seriea Lidia's Italian AMerican Kitchen) -- they have an amazing pasta special every night -- all you can east of four varieties -- served from the pan...great meats and ala cart
Non Italian -- one of my favorites and good for ANYONE -- Cornelia Street Cafe -- classic West Village bistro....great food, not expensive and another good wine list that won;t kill ya

As an Italian, I really like IL DUOMO. It's an excellent Northern Italian restaurant with great food and a warm ambiance. The prices are moderate and the service excellent.
It's located at 300 West End Ave; behind Lincoln Center.

I must try Becco. I love Lidia. I always watch her cook on tv.
Does your dad like steak? You could always go to one of the fine steak houses we have in NY. Sparks is very nice. How much money do you want to spend?

No, he doesn't like steak! I honestly don't care how much it cost as long as I don't have to hear him comstantly complain.
These are all great ideas! Thanks!

Edison Cafe at the Edison Hotel for basic food and low key atmosphere.
Don Giovanni 358 West 44th, basic Italian and pizza

I've heard that's really good - it's across from the Palace stage door... not really that close to Virgin, though. That makes it a little easier to find.

Posted: 11/13/04 at 12:00amCarmine's is always a safe bet - it's amazing. John's Pizza is amazing, too - they have more than Pizza. There's also Puleo's on 45th Street, it's great.

Posted: 11/13/04 at 12:17amI agree with Carmines, but the portions are HUGE. I've also heard good things about Patsy's.

Carmine's is great but so much garlic.
It is great but your dad might not like the hectic atmosphere.
I would go to Becco or Cucina Staglione in the village.
They have great Italian food and it is calm and cosy.
Why not try Fiamma. Fiamma has great Italian food.

Posted: 11/13/04 at 12:54pmDoes he like a lot of noise and comotion and waiters that are more interested in their next song set than in waiting on you? If not, I wouldn't take him to the Stardust Diner. If you want to take him out for a nice, civilized dinner; excellent food, adult atmosphere, etc., take KMF's and Corine2's advice and take him to Becco. But be sure to make reservations well in advance.

Posted: 11/13/04 at 2:04pmIf you can afford it and get a reservation, "Orso", um, for steak and stuff "Angus McDoe" (I don't think it's spelled right, but Angus is on 44th and broadway next to John's pizzeria. John's pizzeria is good for italian, too, and not just pizza, although there pizza is amazing! Oh, and in Queens, "Il Baco" is the best Italian restaraunt I've ever been to. What else, for brunch, Marquet on 11th and University is really good, but it's a bit arty and cute, but it's really yummy! Westside Restaraunt around 64th or 65th and somewhere between broadway and amsterdam avenue. Cafe Mozart on 70th and broadway is great, but pricey for desert and coffee.
