I often call people that are younger than me ma'am, it's just how they raised us "down south"
I first got called sir at about 19 and freaked out, I first got called ma'am around 21. :)

3 years ago(when I was 24) I was doing some freelancing for a local paper. I went to a high school to cover a story, and a parent in his 40s asked me which kid was mine. I'm talking about 17 & 18-year-old kids. I wanted to kick the guy in the nuts. I still get carded in restaurants today, there's no way I look like I could have a teenager, but it was still a depressing day.

Posted: 4/29/05 at 11:18amI can handle "Sir", but what I can't handle, as I cringe, and my nerves get shot is "Mister".

I got mistaken for being 17 about a month and a half ago.. That pleased me greatly considering I am closer to 30 than 17..
I know how you feel about the ma'am bit though.. I was called ma'am at 18.. by a guy I wound up dating no less.. Southerners!! it's just how many of them are..

People consistantly guess that I'm 3-5 years younger than I am. It doesn't bother me so much now, I'm 26, but when I was 18 and the cashier at WalMart told me I "don't look a day over 15!" I was very annoyed.
Being from Georgia the Ma'am thing doesn't usually get to me, but the way that many middle aged southern men call all women Honey or Sweetheart really gets to me.

Posted: 4/29/05 at 12:16pmyeah, I know its a southern thing but still...I guess I am having my quarter life crisis...I brought this on myself lol. Most married women are old enough to be called M'am...and well I do have the ring lol

Posted: 4/29/05 at 1:44pmI'm in that wierd place. I still get mad when I'm carded... But I realize that it should be a good thing. I've always looked a bit older than I am, though.

When I was working an opening night last year this kid -- probably about 14 years old -- called me ma'am. I got a little offended and asked him how old he thought I was. His response was: "I dunno... but you look like my mom's age."
I think that offended me more than him calling me ma'am! lol

Everyone thinks I am a lot older than a junior in high school. Whenever I go to the theatre alone...I will usually talk with those next to me...they ask me if I am interested in theatre for a career. I tell them the story...they ask me if I am studying it in college. I tell them no, lol. Same thing at American Eagle. They ask me to apply for a credit card there.
Fine now, not fine when I am old.
