What was the first musical film to take home the Academy Award for Best Picture?

Ellie, you are smokin' tonight! re: Oscar Night Trivial Pursuit #2

Yes, THE BROADWAY MELODY (1929), a backstage saga of two sisters from a small town who come to Broadway to "make good" was the first musical to win the Oscar for Best Picture (and incidentially, it was only the second time the Oscars had been awarded.)

DOUBLE Congrats, Ellie!

Now for your bonus points: how many sequels did the original THE BROADWAY MELODY spawn?

Gee, I go downstairs for a minute to feed my cats and there's another contest up! It doesn't matter, I didn't know this one anyway. :)

Hint #1: The Gabors, Mice, Scarlett O'Hara's husbands...

But of course the answer is three, Ellie! re: Oscar Night Trivial Pursuit #2

There was:

THE BROADWAY MELODY OF 1936

THE BROADWAY MELODY OF 1938

THE BROADWAY MELODY OF 1940

(P.S. There was gonna be a FOURTH, THE BROADWAY MELODY OF 1944--but its title got changed to BROADWAY RHYTHM.--just so you know.) re: Oscar Night Trivial Pursuit #2

And your SECOND prize, Ellie? Well, tomorrow, you're Broadway-Bound!!! Don't worry, you'll find plenty of fame and fortune--and oh yes, your share of heartbreak as well!!!

It can get mighty lonely at the top--ESPECIALLY in a 1929 movie musical! re: Oscar Night Trivial Pursuit #2
