Will it be as bad as Joan Crawford in "Torch Song"?
Link
I have heard good things about this movie...but I guess people are "offended" and are planning a boycott, so...that's the big "outrage" for this week.
I understand the boycott is about mocking the mentally challenged--not, surprisingly, about the black face.

Where were they when Rosie did that retarded girl riding the bus with her uptight rich sister?
I love this line (denoted by two -- in the paragraph below):
The comments section below this story will now inevitably be filled up by the extremist minority, rallying their forces in support of this ludicrous move to treat the word “retard” as if it’s a burning cross on a black man’s front yard. Their comments will inevitably be from people who haven’t seen the movie and wouldn’t know satire if it smacked them in the face, but are nevertheless convinced it’s hateful. --You’ll recognize them, because they’ll say things like “I’m in favor of free speech, but”, while conveniently ignoring the fact that free speech with a “but” tacked onto the end isn’t free speech at all.-- What they really mean to say is “free speech is fine as long as you say exactly what I want.” DreamWorks has wisely chosen to ignore them. They know a misguided, vocal minority when they see it.

i saw et...or parts of it anyway.
There is a great interview with Robert Downey, Jr., Ben Stiller and Jack Black in the current "Entertainment Weekly." I had no desire to see the movie until I read it.
as far as the use of a differently abled character, i won't see this movie in the theatre (yeah, $11 for this?) and will reserve judgment until i see how the portrayal is done. i think the farrelly brothers - of all people - have set the standard for the portrayal of the differently abled in comedies with stuck on you and something about mary.
as far as blackface, i'm all about it. you gots a problem with that sambo?
Same here, DBillyP. I was much more intrigued about the film after reading that piece.
Meanwhile, his blackface seems to be more in the Delta Burke vein...
"I dont care if you're a California Raisin! You stay away from US!"
I think people are forgetting this is a comedy and satire.Only people they should worry about offending is African Americans, and from what I can tell they "get the satire" and are not the ones calling for boycotts.

All these boycotts are nothing but sound and fury.
They're not even that big.
I mean really, how many people are gonna stay away b/c the word "retard" is used?
I say get over yourselves and re-read the first amendment.

What about Gene Wilder in Silver Streak?
What about Eddie Murphy playing white folks?
... and Asians on occasions.

I haven't seen the movie, so I'll reserve judgement until then. Since his character is a white man playing a black man, I think that could mitigate a lot of trouble. It doesn't seem inherently offensive to me, though.
And I agree about Eddie Murphy. Every time he gets in white face it just opens the wounds of the oppressed white man. After centuries of being enslaved and put down by the black man, we finally have the same rights in society and that damn Eddie has to go pouring salt in our wounds.
