As Tony Kornheiser said yesterday on PTI, "I don't care because I thought he retired three years ago."

He was a great sidekick to Jordan in Chicago, but everything that he did (or didn't do) after he left the Bulls hurt his legacy (and his egomaniacal anti-team attitude didn't help). If there was another vote for the NBA Top 50 team, there's no way he'd make it again (or even the top 75). He should have retired YEARS ago. A great defensive player and complimentary player, but an all-time great? No way.

My basketball (and general sports) fanaticism isn't quite as intense as it used to be (too many egos, not enough fundamentals even among the superstars), but at one time I'd definitely say that my passion for basketball was on a par with my passion for theatre (as well as film, opera, jazz, r&b, psychology, ethnic studies, American history & politics, and slew of other subjects that'll never come up on these boards).

I terrible at ranking (which figures, since that's supposedly the highest order of thinking), but Pippin was a spectacular player in his own right when he was in his prime. That prime just happened to coincide with that of you-know-who.

Mr. Pippin's record will always reflect the input of those he played with. He was not a driving force. He was lucky to have been around when Mr. Jordan was. While Michael almost certainly would have risen to the top in most situations, Scotty only wears his rings because he happened to be at the right place at the right time. Not that he didn't contribute, but nothing more than most any other competent player would have.

Sueleen...only a Chicagoan would know they call him "No Tippin' Pippin". I only know because a friend of mine *cough* used to work for Michael Jordan's restaraunt in Chicago and anytime Pippin would go in with his entourage, not only did he NOT have to pay for the food and drinks, but he wouldn't leave a tip for the waiter or waitress who he ran ragged all night. I laughed when I read your post...I could hear her going on about it. re: Scotty Pipin is retiring....
