I wish Redhot.....no, but I stayed in some up there.
Are you crazy Jose'? I'm not relocating for a week.
It's not a warm beach vacation, but the week between XMas and New Year's is fanTAStic on the cape. P-town is open enough that you can eat (Chester, Front Street and a few others open for that week), many of the stores have their half of half sales, and the beach is just painfully beautiful--big crashing waves, roiling clouds on stormy days, piercing blue skies on sunny days. Enough people so that you're not alone, but you can def. be alone if you want. And going back to the room and getting warm is good, too.
If it were me I'd choose Puerto Vallarta. Good exchange on the dollar and warm. Fun gay nightlift and somewhat exotic. Also, a complete change from PA. The budget should be just about right.
I personally wouldn't recommend San Diego for that time of year. The weather can be lovely or rainy. Late fall or spring is much better. I live in San Diego.
Also, Palm Springs can be nice during the day, but the nights are cool. Sometimes the days are cool and if you take away the pool time during the day, that's more than half the fun. Of course, there are other ways to make fun in Palm Springs.

Wait a minute! Robb has a PARTNER? Damn, another name gets scratched off my potential ex list (unless you have one of those fabulous open relationships. Call me. Mwah!)
RobbO, here's some all-serious suggestions.
If you're feeling patriotic, stick around the US and come back to NYC. SO many amazing hotels (my personal favorite is the Hotel Gansevoort) which are likely offering great packages right now in the downtime between summer and holiday tourist phases. And, of course, there's that silly thing called Broadway for which this board exists.
I'd also second San Diego. It's my favorite city in the US.
If you're going to go global, seriously give Tokyo a try. I lived there for 6 months and loved nearly every minute of it. The language barrier is sometimes a problem but, if you stick to Tokyo and the major tourist cities (such as Nikko, which I would most definitely suggest you visit), you won't have a problem, signs and menus are in English and most places offer at least one or two employees who can communicate with you.
Flights to Tokyo are expensive but, once you're there, you benefit from that nice exchange rate (which is about $1 to 125 yen right now, I think). THings are slightly more expensive in Tokyo than, say, New York, but you'll go to wonderful restaurants there and spend no more than you would on a very fancy dinner here.
And if you like sushi, well, you won't find a better city for it.
i'm impressed with the suggestions, thanks. we're going to give them all good thought as we have other factors to consider.
i love pennsylvania but want to vacation elsewhere. nyc is always great, but we're both jersey boys so we've been there millions of times and are close enough to go back for weekend trips at a moments notice.
i'd love to go someplace warm that time of year but i don't want to limit myself. i was actually thinking about london (pop?, cm2?) but don't know about the weather that time of year...
someplace in california would also be a great possibility but i'd love to travel to a more remote locale like italy ( i was there before around x-mas), ireland, germany or the like. i have lots more research to do but thanks for all the info. i will give them all careful thought.
thanks!
As much as I love London, was there once this same week and found many attractions/etc closed for both Christmas and Boxing day...The weather is usually similar to NYC -- usually a touch warmer....
Robbo - we plan to get some friends of ours to go in with us and rent a villa in Italy at some point - sharing a kitchen to save on eating out, and just luxuriating in the countryside, etc;...maybe next fall, if I can get time off and have the money by then.

Costa Rica... Costa Rica...
What about Greece? I don't know what the weather is like that time of the year, but crusing the Greek Islands is an AMAZING vacation.
Also, the French Riviera is romantic, gorgeous, and an awesome vacation spot, though it can get kinda pricey...
There are plenty of fun things to do here, but if it was up to me, I'd say go overseas!
BB--The Aegean is grey and cold and windy in Dec/Jan. Go in September, after the Germans, but while it's still hot. (With apologies to my German friends....)
RobbO--I'll be at the Hotel Forum starting Dec. 27th. Look me up, and I'll buy you two a drink!
